Does today feel like Monday to you?  It does to us too!  Love your spirit wear?  Looking to bring it to your walls?  We’ve got the answer!  Courtney Kay, a High School senior, has launched Spirit Signs.  Be sure to check it out, (@spirit_signs) and mention She’s Fit To Lead to receive 10% off your purchase.

What inspired you to found Spirit Signs?

I wanted to make something for myself to hang in my dorm! I went to the store and bought some wooden letters to decorate for myself and some friends. I loved doing it, and when I gave them to my friends, they said that they were amazing and that I should start selling them- so I did!

What exactly do you do on a day-to-day basis?

Right now I’m doing internships at a photography studio (2 days a week) and at a mental health law firm (3 days a week). Afterward, I normally hang out with friends or go home. When I’m home, I relax and work on my letters.

What is the best part about running a company while in high school?

I get to do something I love and it relaxes me. It’s cool to create something that teens my age want, and I can connect with them because of that. Whether I’m decorating letters for camp, college, or just initials, I can relate to them and learn about their lives.

What is the most difficult part about running a company while in high school?

I’m busy! Graduation is very soon, I am leaving home to work at a sleep away camp soon, and I have a lot going on right now. Ultimately, I like keeping myself busy and I love being creative. I have been balancing my time well and it is all worth it to me.

What were the biggest surprises (both good and bad) of Spirit Signs?

I couldn’t believe how quickly it took off! I made an Instagram and started following a bunch of people, and suddenly I had 30 orders, and I was going to be in a creative kids art market at Hip Kids in my town, Chappaqua, NY. With that, it was difficult to keep up with orders, but I created a system to make it easier.

What is one piece of advice you would give to a young woman wanting to start her own company?

Do what you love and try new things! I have never been the “artistic” person- which people are shocked about when I tell them. If you want to do something, let nothing stop you. It doesn’t matter if you fail, you gain such great knowledge from trying and nothing can replace that.

Where are you going to college in the fall and what do you plan on studying?

I am going to Penn State University and I am studying criminology and psychology!

What are you most excited for?

I’m so excited to meet new people, try things that I have never gotten to try before, and start learning about things that interest me for the future.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would have?

A photo album of pictures with family and friends, a pen, and paper.

Describe yourself in one word.

How would your best friends describe you?

Fun, outgoing, caring, loyal.

What is your favorite thing to eat?

I love sushi!

What is your favorite television show?

Criminal Minds or Once Upon a Time (I know- very different).

What is the last gift you have received?

A Penn State Alex and Ani bracelet from my best friend.

What is your favorite quote and why?

“You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” – Winnie the Pooh

I think it’s so easy to get caught up in thinking that you are less than others in society. Growing up is hard, kids are mean and it’s hard to think positively of yourself when you believe others do not. When others tell you can’t do something, it’s so important that you don’t doubt yourself. When someone brings you down, you need to bring yourself back up. I believe teens are wiser, stronger, and braver than they think they are- the hard part is remembering to give yourself that credit.
