For years, Andrea Pierce-Naymon’s daughter was ill and no one knew why. Andrea’s own research both before and after her daughter being diagnosed with POTS led her to focus on the toxicity of every day skincare products. So what did she do? Like all innovators, she realized she “had the opportunity to change the status quo,” and she went for it. From Pink Himalayan salt to Manuka honey and more, OY-L offers healthy, detoxifying and fabulous skincare solutions. Read on to learn why you should pay attention to what you are putting on your face and body, and the amazing options that OY-L has developed:
What were you doing before founding OY-L?
Before creating OY-L, I was leading a successful career in medical sales. Once I had my two daughters I decided to get involved in the family business as the women’s buyer for a high-end men and women’s retail store in Cleveland, Ohio. Once OY-L went from being a hobby to a full-fledged business I hired someone to take over my role at the retail store so that I could dedicate 100% of my time to continue growing OY-L into a successful business.
What was your inspiration for founding OY-L?
For years, my daughter was ill and doctors didn’t know why. I took it upon myself to investigate potential causes that could be making her ill. Through my research, I discovered how toxic the skin care and makeup products my daughters and I used were on a daily basis. After two years, my daughter was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) which is a category illness of Dysautonomia. One of the effects of having POTS means my daughter has to consume a lot more salt, on a daily basis, than the average person. This inspired me to create the Pink Himalayan bath salts and body scrubs, which were the first products to the OY-L skin care line. Unlike any other salt on earth, Pink Himalayan salt is unprocessed and toxin-free, has 84 trace minerals, and helps detoxify and relax the body; making it the safest and highest-quality ingredient I could use in these products.
You knew you had a great idea. How did you get others to believe?
Once I discovered just how little transparency there was in the beauty industry when it came to ingredients, I realized I had an opportunity to change the status quo. I first started sharing my skin care products and knowledge with friends, family and basically anyone who would listen. Just like me, many consumers were brought up to trust companies selling skin care and beauty products without questioning what was in them. Today’s consumers are very savvy and are much more prone to read ingredient labels before purchasing an item. By sharing what I knew and how OY-L’s all-natural, luxury skin care was different from the rest of the products out there, I was able to differentiate it from the rest.
What is your favorite part of what you do?
My favorite part of what I do is knowing I’m making a difference in my friends‘, family’s and consumers’ lives by creating an all-natural, luxury skin care line that is only made from the best all-natural, preservative and toxic-free ingredients from around the world.
Why should we care about chemicals in our skin care products?
I believe consumers don’t have to compromise when it comes to being healthy and having all-natural, luxury skin care products. It’s important for consumers to realize that the FDA doesn’t have a lot of restrictions on the beauty industry when it comes to what ingredients are used. Many beauty and cosmetic products include phthalates, lead, aluminum, formaldehyde, sodium lauryl sulfate, BHA, boric acid, fragrance (or parfum), and parabens, all of which have been linked to a long list of health problems from allergies, infertility, to cancers. That’s why I not only created a safe skin care alternative but I designed a label that easily explains and celebrates the ingredients used in my products because they’re absolutely great for the skin.
Do you have any skincare advice for the busy collegiate? Which of your products would be good for us?
Having two daughters in college I know how busy college life can be. That being said, I think one of the biggest pieces of advice I would share is at a minimum college students should wash their face daily as well as exfoliate their body and face. The OY-L skin care line offers an amazing Manuka Honey Face Wash that’s gentle enough for everyday use, while boasting anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial healing properties to fight acne and other common skin issues by cleansing, purifying, soothing and restoring skin. The OY-L Bath Salts are made with Pink Himalayan Salt, which is a rich source of 84 trace minerals that help with enriching the skin as well as relaxing and soothing the body and mind. The OY-L Body Butters not only smell absolutely amazing, but offer ultra-hydration to enhance the skin’s appearance and softness. Everyday our skin braces the elements from heat and humidity to very cold and dry weather conditions, which is why it’s so important to keep your skin hydrated and clean to keep it healthy.
What do you like best and least about being a founder?
Being the founder of OY-L, I truly enjoy creating something that I envisioned as well as helping people by providing a safe, luxury skin care alternative without all the secrets of what ingredients I use. At the same time, being a founder means I work 24/7 – including the weekends to ensure OY-L succeeds. Thankfully, I created a company that I wholeheartedly believe in which makes the long hours all worth it in the end.
What three words would your friends use to describe you?
Oh boy that’s a tough question! Hopefully they all agree with my answers. I would have to say: caring, driven, and creative.
What’s next on the horizon for you?
Next on the horizon is working hard to continue growing the business for OY-L. Depending how the business grows over the next six months to a year, I may consider expanding the all-natural skin care line.
What makes you feel confident?
As a woman, it’s so important to first and foremost believe in yourself and not be afraid to push the boundaries, to break the status quo. I feel confident because I know that I’m capable of accomplishing anything so long as I put 100% of myself into it. If I don’t believe in myself and know that I’m capable of doing anything, how is anyone else going to believe in me?
