Dive In Deck: Being Alive Influences the World

If life were easy, it wouldn’t be worth living, but, for some people, this uneasiness is the equivalent of an extreme difficulty that has the face of poverty, abuse, homelessness, and others of the like. There are an incredible amount of people in this world who are faced with extreme difficulties, and while it is true that what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger, it doesn’t mean that those who are more fortunate cannot use their strengths to help those in need.

In many cases, helping others is done by donating a bag of unused clothes and goods, or maybe even giving some canned food items to the local shelter. While these are all incredibly selfless acts, it’s important to remember that all of these acts of service end up as forgotten moments. The old trash is taken out and new trash is littered; clothes and goods end up as rags and trash; and food gets eaten, almost as if none of the acts of selflessness happened in the first place. But there is a way to avoid the forgotten moments and create memories that last forever.

The greatest act of service one can provide is to donate time, as time is the one thing that will never expire. Time is the ultimate way to learn about a problem’s impact, rather than the problem itself, and to understand the people of different backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs. Rather than donating goods or food to a third party, go out and find the people who need help and learn about who they are, what they like and dislike, and the other qualities that make them unique. Getting to know people on this level does more than put a smile on everyone’s faces, it allows the person you are talking to remember what strengths they have and help them get through whatever trials they are enduring. The memories of having someone take the time to learn about one’s values, flaws, assets, hopes and dreams never goes away, and most of the time, that’s all anyone really needs to succeed in life.

Just spending a few hours with someone who is hurting, whether it be physically, mentally or emotionally, can change his or her attitude, perspective, and sometimes, even life, for the better. Helping someone realize the potential within him or her and understand his or her unique abilities creates a light that burns brighter with each passing moment. This light is an indescribable energy felt by all in its immediate presence and is harnessed to be shared with the world.

The influence each and every person in this world has on humanity is incredibly powerful. If every person were to dedicate just a little time to helping others develop their strengths, the world would be filled with an incredible amount of compassion, love, and appreciation for life.

Time isn’t something that can be priced, but it has indefinite value. To all of those who are at a loss as to how to serve humanity, the answer is simple. Prioritize time to learn about the people who make up the home you live in, the city you reside in, and the world you were born into. Time is of the essence, and the essence is your presence.
