Who are you and can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Birgit and I live in Florida, with my husband and 5 cats. I grew up in South Africa where I spent the first part of my adult life. I’m a joyful free-spirit and have been creating ever since I can remember. I inherited my love and talent of creating from my mother who used to make all of our clothing and stuffed toys. I’m a dreamer at heart, optimistic and always like to see the brighter side of things. I love being outdoors, getting my hands dirty in the soil, cultivating my herb and vegetable garden and spending my Summers at the beach.
What exactly is Blue Haven Holistics?
Blue Haven Holistics is a small-batch, plant-infused, natural skin and body care line based in Jacksonville, Florida. Everything is formulated with 100% natural, non-GMO, wildcrafted and organic ingredients. In fact, most of the ingredients you could eat 🙂 Our purpose is to provide luxury self-care products that not only provide an uplifting experience but also bring amazing results.
What inspired you to start Blue Haven Holistics?
After a diverse career, including time in the corporate world, I decided that I wanted to live a more healthy and holistic lifestyle. I started truly questioning what was in the food I was eating and the products I was putting on my skin. I studied herbalism, and was fascinated by the power of plant-based healing. This led me to delve into aromatherapy and skincare. With the knowledge I had gained, I started creating products for myself and friends, it soon grew into something much larger and Blue Haven Holistics was born.
How did you come up with the name?
I wanted a name that could incorporate anything “holistic”. Everything is connected, meaning; mind, body and soul. It’s all a whole, interrelated. I felt the name could grow in which ever direction the business went.
You give back some of your sales to Animal Rescues, can you tell us about that?
My first passion is creating, my second is animal welfare. Before I started this business I volunteered and fostered for our local animal shelter. Along with my fellow volunteers I was making a difference and saving lives. At times it was emotionally draining. I got to experience the sometimes lack of responsibility and the disposable mentality of pet owners. However, it was also very rewarding. The joy would come seeing a cat or a dog adopted into a loving family. As my business grew, I had less time to devote to volunteering so I decided that I would pay it forward another way. I donate 5% of all sales to animal rescues. All not-so-perfect soaps, body butters and lip balms are donated to local homeless shelters.
You were just Leaping Bunny approved, can you tell us about that?
This is something that resonates with me and I’m very passionate about. In this day and age there is never a reason that would justify testing any products on animals only to further our gain. Leaping Bunny is an internationally recognized certification for personal care and household brands that use ingredients and ingredient suppliers that are 100% cruelty-free and do not test products on animals. Being Leaping Bunny approved is a badge of honor!
Is there a favorite product?
It’s really difficult to pick out just one favorite product. A couple of my favorites and that I personally use are; the Neroli + Rose Face Serum, the Vitamin C Facial Cleansing Grains and the Blue Tansy Body Butter. I spend a lot of time outdoors and in the sun so I need to use products that moisturize dry skin and help with hyper pigmentation.
What is your favorite part about running Blue Haven Holistics?
I’m happiest when I’m creating. It’s what I do best and it’s certainly my passion. I love taking my ideas and formulating products. The reward is that people are using products that are created ethically, from natural ingredients, that are safe for them and the environment.
What is your least favorite part about running Blue Haven Holistics?
The financial aspect and social media. Although I’m good at numbers it’s not what I enjoy doing. Social media is a learning curve for me. I’m an introvert so putting myself out there is not a natural process.
How do you spread the word about yourself?
Do you have any advise for fellow entrepreneurs?
Follow your dream. Stay focused on what you want and work toward it. Believe in yourself and do not let anybody discourage you. Even when it may become difficult, don’t give up. I have to remind myself of this from time to time.
Do you have a favorite quote or go to saying?
“She believed she could, so she did”. I saw this on a coffee cup once and it resonated. It’s all about believing in yourself and your ability to accomplish anything you set your mind on.
