Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Alexandra Nash and I run Yuhme together with my husband Alexander Nash. We have two little girls- Freya 4 years old and Harlow 2 years old. I used to be an elite swimmer and was also a collegiate swimmer in America- where I ended up staying for 7 years and my husband a professional rugby player from the UK. We now live in Sweden, and run Yuhme together with 3 other companies. I love to travel, the outdoors, stillness, coffee, spend time with my family and to make a difference.
What exactly is Yuhme?
Yuhme stands for You US Humanity Me Environment and is a social entrepreneurial company. We have a developed a water bottle made from sugarcane that is Co2 negative, and free from all toxins for the consumer to safely drink out of it. We work together with an organization called Water for Good that works exclusively in the Central African Republic to provide the population with clean drinking water. For every water bottle that we sell we donate 6 months of clean water to a person in the CAR.
What inspired you to start Yuhme?
I have always been a seeker and been wanting to do something that serves a higher purpose, and to volunteer my time on a greater course. However, I was always under the impression that you needed to have a lot of money before you could really start helping people. So when I was going on maternity leave with our youngest daughter Harlow I was determined to find my why! What started with reading a book about social entrepreneurship ended up with our Yuhme water bottle ready for the market a year later.
How did you come up with the name?
The name stands for You Us Humanity Me Environment, which is the cornerstones of Yuhme- Humanity, the Consumer and the Earth. A funny story here is as I was going on maternity leave with Harlow as I mentioned earlier I had bought our then little unborn baby girl a stuffed animal- a bunny that I named “Dreams”. So that I would remember everytime I saw her with it that I was out to find my Why and Dream. After we had our first ever public speaking event a girl from Japan came up to me afterwards, I had then told the story about the bunny. She said “are you aware that “Yume” in Japanese means dream?
Where are your products sold? Are they sold in stores?
They are sold worldwide via our webshop but also in selected retailers in Sweden, USA, Australia, Jersey to name a few so far.
What is your favorite part about running Yuhme?
The feeling of making a difference and working on my passion every day. Including our children and being able to provide a different kind of lifestyle for my family.
What is your least favorite part about running Yuhme?
Probably all the hard sales that we have to do (and need to get better at), because at the end of the day if we don’t sell any water bottles we also don’t make a difference.
You give back clean water with every purchase, can you tell us about that?
We work together with Water for Good, and they have people in the CAR and in fact the just started their first own drilling company. So we donate for every sale towards increasing access to clean water for the people of the CAR. Our dream and vision together with them is that all people of the CAR should have access to clean water, and all children should be in school instead of carrying dirty water for hours every day. With Yuhme going only for about 9 months we have already donated enough money to match the funding to dig an entirely new well. It is incredible what we really can do in a short time!
How do you spread the word about your company?
A lot on social media, newsletter, website, but also we do events both tradeshows and speaking gigs. There is a lot of information out there today so you really have to dig deep to make your voice heard.
Do you have any advice for fellow entrepreneurs?
Start before you are ready, fail big, dream bigger, and be kind.
Do you have a favorite quote or go to saying? 🙂
“Be the change you wish to see in the world” That is also where the Yuhme hashtag we use in social media #betheyuhme is derived from.
