Who are you? & can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m Kelly Hoffman – the owner and designer of Wrapped in Happiness. I’m an east coast girl who just recently moved to San Diego to pursue my jewelry biz dream. Along with hand making each and every piece of jewelry purchased from Wrapped in Happiness – I’m an energetic, fiery Aries who loves to travel, practice yoga and live life to the fullest with good food and even better company.
What exactly is Wrapped in Happiness?
Wrapped in Happiness is a wearable reminder to seek positivity and happiness in everything you do, big or small. All pieces are made to order with an underlying theme of “wrapping” oneself in everything believed to be your true happiness, both physically and mentally. Our pieces are made in sterling silver and gold fill materials along with the energies of labradorite, moonstone and quartz crystals. With a passion for jewelry and simple inspiration, Wrapped in Happiness sparked the light in me, to make pieces that shine through you.
What inspired you to start Wrapped in Happiness?
I’ve always had a love for fashion and jewelry growing up, but never knew exactly how to incorporate that into a career path. I was late to the game in figuring out what I wanted to do with my life after college and just stuck with the first thing that I was good at – which included working 8-5 behind a computer in the corporate world. After a little over a year, I was laid off due to a company acquisition. This was bittersweet for me because I knew that world was not for me, yet I was dreading looking for another job I didn’t even want in the first place. While struggling through countless interviews only to be told I wasn’t qualified enough, I turned to making jewelry, which started completely as a hobby and a form of a creative outlet.
I surprisingly found so much joy in making something so small, something that was created completely by me and unlike anything else. It was the one thing I had control of in my life at the time and it was the one thing I could do where I would lose complete track of time and everything around me – I just wanted to create. It took some time to gain the confidence to even show people my finished work, but once I did the amazing support I received gave me the courage to open up my own online shop. Within two years my little online shop has grown into merchandising local stores and moving across the country to put on jewelry shows at different venues, something I never in a million years would have thought I would have the courage to do.
How did you come up with the name?
It’s actually a pretty bizarre story. I found an old t-shirt buried in my closet one day with the word “happiness” on the front of it in these tiny, cursive letters. I wore it out a few places and everyone jokingly called me “happiness” the whole day. Anyway, a week or so later, my mom hosted her annual “psychic party” with a bunch of her friends and a few family members. During my Mom’s session, she got to ask three questions to the Medium, which she usually asks about her three kids, my brother, sister and I. While receiving these in-depth, lengthy readings for both my two siblings, when the focus was finally directed towards me, the only word she said was “Happiness”. I don’t know if this was fate or just some crazy, ironic coincidence – but I think it’s safe to say that confirmation helped guide me towards creating my own happiness, Wrapped in Happiness.
You have given back proceeds from purchases; can you tell us about that?
Yes. Every few months I’ll donate a portion of all my jewelry sales during a certain time frame to a specific cause that either myself or others are passionate about. I’ve collected funds for disaster relief programs, pet rescue clinics, toy drives for children and health care programs with plans to keep that list growing. Connecting with my customers and the community around me is my number one priority, it’s not always about just selling a product. I wouldn’t even have this business if it wasn’t for those around me keeping me going every day and I’m extremely grateful to be able to give that kind of support back to others.
Is there a favorite product?
I’m not sure if there’s one specific favorite, but I do know that a customer gets excited when they can customize their jewelry! Each piece is made to order by hand and can be adjusted or altered creating a unique, one-of-a-kind keepsake. I also make bracelets and necklaces that can be engraved with special words, dates or coordinates that customers love to purchase as gifts or for themselves as a little reminder they get to carry around with them.
What is your favorite part about running Wrapped in Happiness?
Definitely the people I’ve met. I was kind of quiet and shy growing up, but once I found something that I loved and am truly passionate about, it broke me out of that bubble and gave me the confidence to put myself out there. I’ve met so many amazing people through my jewelry – whether it’s talking to over 1,000 yogis that stop by my booth at a big yoga festival or to the woman who stopped me in the grocery to admire my earrings. It’s all about the connections and relationships I’ve made that make this all worthwhile.
What is your least favorite part about running Wrapped in Happiness?
There’s really nothing I dislike about it. Sometimes it gets a little tough balancing all aspects of running a business while still holding another part-time job, so I’ve been learning how to prioritize and make sure I don’t take on more than I can handle. It’s a hard thing for me grasp sometimes because I want to say yes to all opportunities that come my way, but I’ve learned it’s definitely better to focus on a few things at once then wear yourself down to fit everything into your schedule.
How do you spread the word about your company?
Word of mouth, mostly. I have to thank my amazing customers and support system for constantly sharing my work with others! And also, by doing pop-up shops and jewelry shows at local events, I’ll take pretty much any opportunity to get out and network.
Do you have any advice for fellow entrepreneurs?
Never compare yourself to other successful businesses. The whole point of creating your own business – your own brand – is that it’s different from everything else.
Do you have a favorite quote or go to saying? 🙂
“There is no path to happiness; happiness is the path.” – The Buddha
I was gifted a bracelet with this quote engraved on it years before I even started making jewelry and it’s kind of just followed me through life. Another crazy reason why the word “happiness” hits home for me so much. There is no physical path, career or relationship that will lead you to your ultimate happiness – it’s all about you and your mindset, it’s what lies in your heart.
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
Thank you so much for considering me for this interview! 🙂
