Can you tell us a little about yourself?
First off, Hi, my name is Kara and I was born and raised in Omaha, NE. I love to travel, bake and garden. I have always been interested in our environment and am continually learning ways to lessen our impact. I am a fan of kittens, coffee, and chocolate.
What exactly is Wild Public?
Wild Public is a small business I started in 2017. It is an online t-shirt shop that gives 10% of profits to charity.
What inspired you to start Wild Public?
I was inspired to start Wild Public because I wanted to do more. I wanted to raise awareness and funds for causes close to my heart; the effects and causes of global warming, the rights of all humans being in jeopardy, and the overall choice to care about each other and our planet.
How did you come up with the name?
This all started around the time of the presidential election and I was trying to find a name that would showcase the public – the people – challenging ideas and social norms.
You give back with every purchase, can you tell us about that?
Sure, as a 9-to-5er my resources are limited to help the causes I believe in and currently there is a fairly big trend of small business donating a portion of proceeds to charity. I already knew I wanted to own a small business, I already knew I wanted to donate money and these two ideas merge together to form Wild Public, a way I could do both.
It was not easy to narrow down the exact charities or the exact model of giving and I may still switch it up, but I will always continue to give 10% of Wild Publics profits to social and environmental causes.
What is your favorite part about running Wild Public??
My favorite part about running Wild Public is when I calculate how much I get to donate. Being able to contribute while doing something I love is very rewarding.
What is your least favorite part about running Wild Public??
Being a creative person means inspiration can strike anywhere and you cannot always drop everything to work, so my least favorite part about running a small business is practicing patience and trying to keep the motivation behind all my creative ideas.
Is there a favorite product?
I do not think I could choose, but any product that speaks to being kind is a favorite without a doubt!
Where are your products sold?
All my products are sold on Etsy, at www.wildpublic.com
How do you spread the word about your company?
I spread the word about Wild Public through social media, @shopwildpublic, and brand ambassadors.
Do you have any advice for fellow entrepreneurs?
Do not quit when it starts to get hard. There will always be ups and downs, but if you truly enjoy the work you are doing and believe in yourself, the downs will pass and it’ll make the ups that much more enjoyable! Also, remember to always take time for yourself; there is no shame in taking a break and unplugging to slow down and enjoy life.
Do you have a favorite quote or go to saying?
Yes! My favorite quote is “We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us” Joseph Campbell
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
