With the new year just beginning, many of us are thinking about lifestyle changes that can be implemented for 2019.
Many people look to modify their diets and daily regimens. Some may even decide to become a Vegan. As a matter of fact, an entire month has been dedicated to veganism. In January 2014, Veganuary started in the UK and has since expanded around the world. It is now “a registered charity…that encourages people to try [becoming] vegan for January.”*
According to Plant Based.org, “when the movement began 3,300 people participated,” and 2019 is expected to be its biggest year yet, “with an anticipated 300,000 people taking part.”
Why are so many people choosing a vegan lifestyle? According to The Vegan Society “Veganism represents a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, other animals.” Though this is the major reason for people to go vegan, there are also health benefits to maintaining the vegan diet.
There are many essential nutrients that can be found in vegan dishes, “Several studies have reported that vegan diets tend to provide more fiber, antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds. They also appear to be richer in potassium, magnesium, folate and vitamins A, C and E, ” Healthline.com explains. Vegan gurus are not only concerned about what they eat, many of them look to use plant-based products in their daily routines.
Jo Rosenfeld, a beauty consultant for a vegan friendly skin care line, Beauty Counter, is an expert about the benefits of a vegetarian diet. “My thought process and food prep are true vegan. I once read a great piece which shared that when you eat things without labels then you don’t need to get caught up in calorie, carb or any other counting. It’s a philosophy which I’ve adopted.” Rosenfeld explains. “It’s so much more comfortable to eat a plant-based diet, and food prep allows for plating with a rainbow of possibilities,” she adds.
Vegans have become imaginative in their recipes too. It is evident in the many extraordinary cookbooks that have been published in the past few years. Some of the flavorful and healthy recipes from Wall Flower Kitchen require minimal fuss and can be made in under an hour. Favorite vegan recipes include: 10 Minute Creamy Vegan Bean and Aubergine Casserole, Creamy Mushroom Risotto, Chickpea Curry with Potatoes and Penne with Chickpeas in Smoky Tomato Sauce.
Other benefits of going vegan include clearer skin, improved energy and better sleep. ** Rosenfeld notices the benefits it has had on her skin and plans to continue filling her plate with the freshest ingredients. Enriching her body with an array of both vegan and organic foods has also helped her relieve stress and feel more at peace.
However, “It’s not always rainbows and butterflies once you decide you want to go vegan,” Nutriciously.com states. Plant based foods are lower in calories than animal products, so one may have to eat more than usual to maintain their ideal weight. Indulging in vegan junk food may be counterproductive to achieving a healthy vegan lifestyle. Whether you are vegan or not it is important to read your labels and follow what works best for your own body.
