As I was growing up, I was constantly indecisive about what career I wanted to have. I thought it would be interesting to be a journalist, a police officer, a veterinarian, or even a personal trainer. It wasn’t until I was about 16 or 17 years old when I had the idea of becoming a dietitian.
I’ve always loved food not to mention that I love talking about food, but I really didn’t realize what exactly went into being a dietitan. I thought I would go to college and study dietetics and BAM I would automatically be a dietitian. But, it’s a little more complex than that. It is a requirement to do some sort of study in dietetics or nutrition or something similar to that; however, I went a little different route and made my major exercise science and my minor nutrition. After finishing a bachelor’s degree in this field, you basically have 2 options to get you where you want to be. You can either do your master’s in dietetics or you can do an internship in dietetics. Either way works, and when you finish either one of those, then you have to take a test to officially become a registered dietitian.
Dietitians can work almost anywhere; hospitals, nursing homes, private practices, and even with sports teams. But me, I want to work with babies or children. Children and especially babies are far more complex than adults. I think that’s what made me intrigued, having more of a challenge. Children are so much more picky and need more nutrients like calcium, and babies sometimes need to be on tubefeeding which is something I discovered not that long ago. Honestly, wanting to be a dietitian is a little like wanting to be a doctor. Everyone’s going to have different opinions on certain things, and everything will constantly be changing ,and sometimes there never is a right or wrong answer. You don’t even have to listen to me for this information, it’s everywhere these days.
The need for dietitians is growing, because people want someone else to tell them what to eat, and some people are unaware of just how much our diets play a role in our everyday lives. The thing is, people always look for inspiration on what they want to be, but the inspiration is themselves. I inspired myself to want this career.I didn’t need to hear someone else talk me into it. I’ve learned that living a healthy life is one of the greatest things you can do. It brings so much positivity to life, and I think lots of people don’t realize it. I realized just how much food really does play a role in our everyday lives. I saw how eating healthy changed my hair, my skin, my outlook on life, and my mood. But these days, many people seem not to care. They want to eat what they think tastes good without thinking twice. It’s hard to really think about ramifications like heart disease that won’t show up until years later, but I think we have to. How could we not? If people were educated about just how much food played a role in our everyday lives, then maybe heart disease wouldn’t be the number one killer right now.
