I’ll admit it; I’m a Personal Development Junkie, and I’m not sorry about it. Ever since I was 18, when I first heard the words “Personal Growth”, I was intrigued. The desire to grow is in our human DNA; think about it, when we were younger, all we wanted to do was grow taller and get “bigger”. And for the average human, the only talk of growth is about physical growth, the growth of our bodies. But what about our minds? Our hearts? Our souls? Can those grow, too? The answer to those questions is a very strong “YES”! And Personal Development is the key to strengthening our minds, hearts, and souls.
Personal Development comes in all forms: Books, Audiotapes, Podcasts, YouTube Videos, Conferences, Events, Meditation, Yoga, Etc. On an average month, you can find me investing in all of the above, but my journey really started with reading books. I believe that reading is the best way to absorb the content, because there is a certain ownership aspect of buying a personal development book, and I believe having this ownership creates a much more meaningful experience with the book.
So here is my list of my favorite Personal Development books:
This is, by far, my favorite personal development book I’ve ever read. It is a quick read, and it is written as a story, so it is incredibly relatable. It discusses the 5 Laws of Stratospheric Success, which I now conveniently have hung in my room as a constant reminder.
I finished this book in 3 days. Again, it is a quick read, and it is written in a story fashion. It is a story about a young boy who begins a quest to find his “Personal Legend,” and all the amazing individuals he meets along the way. It uses very simple wording, but there are so many profound ideas hidden among each chapter, that you’ll stop reading for a second and take some time to reflect on what was just said.
If you like raw humor, you’ll love this book. Sincero is so relatable and funny, and her wisdom and experience shine through each chapter. She breaks down the book into 4 different sections, and each section builds on the last. If you are a quick reader, you can devour this book in a matter of days.
I love this book simply for the actual agreements themselves. The book is very spiritual, and it does take some “out of the box” thinking to fully comprehend all that Ruiz is talking about, however, if the only thing you take from the book is the actual agreements themselves, you’ll begin to live a more fulfilled life.
This book is an absolute MUST for anyone embarking on a journey of Self-Discovery. It was written in the 1940’s but you can find updated versions with contemporary text. Hill outlines all the ways that we can use our subconscious mind to create our ideal future, and within the 15 chapters, you will find yourself opening your mind to the sheer power of our thoughts and desires when put into action.
If you are in a relationship, or you are currently searching for your soul mate, this book will help you understand both your partner, and yourself, on a whole new level. The premise of this book is that we all associate ourselves with a certain “love language”, and we typically believe that our partner associates themselves with the same language. However, this is not usually the case, and by learning your love language, and your partner’s, you can be sure to strengthen your relationship!
7. The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth by John C. Maxwell
This was the very first Personal Development book I ever read, so there is a special place in my heart for this one. John C. Maxwell is a renowned author in this particular field, so any book you get by him is sure to make you think. This is a book that will take you a while to read, but absolutely worth it!
Buy this book right now. It is a little different than all the books I’ve mentioned above, simply because it is a compilation of 100 short essays that are bound to make you a better person. They take no more than 60 seconds to read, and you can turn to any page in the book and read an essay, and still understand what’s going on.
9. Spirit Junkie by Gabrielle Bernstein
I have to be honest, I have not yet read this book, but it is sitting on my shelf waiting for me to crack it open. This has been recommended to me by SO many people, that I feel safe to recommend it to you. I’ve been following Gabby Bernstein for a while now- she has a wonderful YouTube Channel- so I know her teachings and her mindset are amazing.
10. The Desire Map: A Guide to Creating Goals with Soul by Danielle LaPorte
This is an interactive book that I am currently working my way through. The first half of the book discusses the actual science behind how we set goals and desires. The second half of the book is an actual workbook to help you become clear on how to manifest these desires into reality. I love this book for the purpose that it is interactive, plus it has a really sweet cover design and looks great on my coffee table!
There you have it! These 10 books have changed, and are changing, my life, and I hope they do the same for you. I have one word of caution for you though: read one or two at a time. These books drop so many “truth bombs” on you, that if you are reading more than 2 at a time, it is easy to become overwhelmed and confused with all that you absorbing. Personal Development is a lifetime journey, so take your time with the books!
