The Power of Personal Branding

It’s obvious you’re fit to lead…or else you wouldn’t be reading this right now! You are probably involved in a plethora of student organizations, community service, high level classes, and jobs or internships. But, with hundreds of clubs on campus, there is always the feeling that we, as leaders, need to do more. Just one problem…you can’t do everything! Instead of dipping your feet into a ton of different things, you should dive fully into a few things that you are really passionate about. If you focus on what you love, success will be inevitable.


As the workforce becomes more and more competitive, it is crucial that we find a way to differentiate ourselves and stand out. The job market has progressed far beyond a traditional resume and cover letter. It is not enough to highlight your greatest assets on a single sheet of paper. Instead you need to own who you are in everything you do. You need to create a personal brand. Something that represents who you are and what you stand for.


Whether you are aware of it or not, you already have a personal brand! It is communicated to others through your clothes, tone of voice, interests/hobbies, values, and goals. All of these things contribute to other people’s perception of you — others can get a sense of your values, personality, skills, and attributes. Since you always want others to experience the best version of yourself, you need to make sure that you are in control of your personal brand. You want you effectively manage your personal reputation, so that you always show off your best self – both online and in person.

To start crafting your personal brand, ask yourself: what makes you different than any other strong, independent, hardworking, and passionate young woman? Do you have a love for travel? Are you committed to service and giving back? Have you developed your own app? The answers to these questions will help to unravel who you are and what you stand for.

Now that you know the critical importance of your personal brand, it’s time to develop one! … just follow these steps!

  1. Establish your emotional modifiers

Make a list of words that others would use to describe you.

  1. Describe your identity

Determine the field you wish to work in or the areas you are passionate about.

  1. Determine your purpose

Figure out exactly what you do (or want to do).

  1. Put it together!

Use the lists you’ve created to develop a short, bold statement that embodies who you are.
