What exactly is Stiles In Style?
I’ve always gotten the joke, “ isn’t it funny you love clothes and your last name is Stiles?!” So what better name than Stiles in Style!! Stiles in Style is a startup company where I bleach, cut, snip, and lace-up basic or college sweatshirts and t-shirts, customizing to every customer. I sell my clothing through my Instagram account @Stiles_in_Style.
What inspired you to start Stiles In Style?
To celebrate completing half of my college career, my friends and I took a girls trip to Laguna Beach. While out there, we of course had to stop in LF, and while looking at their iconic lace-up t-shirts, I thought I could totally make something like this for so much less. So I made a trip to New York City to shop around the Garment District and played around with grommet tape, laces, and bleach. I wore one of my sweatshirts out and received so many compliments and started to get requests for duplicates and customized apparel, and that’s how Stiles in Style all started!
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I love scrolling through the Instagram popular page, watching YouTube DIY videos, and looking at my favorite bloggers to get inspired. I’ll see something I like and figure out how to create my own version of it!
How did you start your business?
Since my startup business is only a few weeks old, I’m still learning and figuring everything out as I go! I created merchandise to sell through my Instagram account and I keep track of orders and shipping through excel documents.
How do you balance being a college student and maintaining your business?
All college students are busy balancing school, work, and a social life, but what is hard with a nontraditional job is there’s technically no closing time. I struggle with closing out of my Instagram direct messages and not responding right away to texting orders at all times of the day and night. I didn’t start with expectation of my Instagram taking off this much! Just this past weekend I “closed” while away visiting a friend and she still had to literally rip my phone out of my hand! I get excited that so many people want to order something I make that I sometimes forget that I already have a pile of t-shirts and sweatshirts covering my room waiting to be bleached, snipped, and laced.
What exactly do you do on a day-to-day basis?
Basically, everyday I respond to customers, record and place their orders within an excel doc, run back and forth to the store for the notions (glue, grommet tape, cord, etc.), create the apparel and ship the finish products! I also try to take fun pictures to keep up on my social media! It’s a lot of multitasking for just two hands and one brain!
What are your plans for your business?
I would love to continue selling and broadening the assortment of merchandise I create when I go back to school in Indiana. Maybe possibly expanding into doing vintage band shirts?
What was the biggest surprise in your job?
I think that I am really well organized, but since I receive so many orders everyday and the orders overlap each other, it can be a little overwhelming balancing everything. Also, the business aspect of running Stiles In Style is challenging because it can be hard to make sure I am making a profit, to know when an order is worth my time, and to have reasonably priced clothing because my target customers are college students on a budget.
What is one piece of advice you would give to a young woman who wants to start her own company?
If you have a good idea, others will like it. I started my company by making something for myself for fun and people ended up loving it. I receive about 20 orders a day and I never though Stiles In Style would turn into this. Just run with your idea because it could be successful.
Where do you go to school and what are you studying?
This upcoming school year I will be a Junior at Indiana University, Bloomington studying Apparel Merchandising and Business.
