Skylar Yoo – Inspiring & Empowering Women To Be Bold

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I’m Alice Yoo, founder and CEO of Skylar Yoo. Before Skylar Yoo, I was the editor-in-chief of a popular art and culture blog called My Modern Met. That site currently receives over 3.7 million visitors per month or over 100,000 visitors a day. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family – I have a wonderful husband, two active toddler boys, as well as two loving dogs. I’m big into meditation, reading, podcasts, art, design and photography.

What exactly is Skylar Yoo?

We’re a company dedicated to inspiring and empowering women to be their boldest selves. We sell apparel, art prints and accessories to the modern feminist.

What inspired you to start Skylar Yoo?

I started Skylar Yoo for two reasons. The first reason is that I want girls and women to feel proud of themselves, to know their worth. Growing up, I had low self-esteem. I never felt as though I was good enough. It was only in my thirties and now forties that I feel more confident. I wish someone had told me early on that I was worthy – that I didn’t have to earn someone’s love – that just by the mere fact that I was born, I was worthy. The second reason I started Skylar Yoo was because of the Women’s March. I was inspired by all of these women who stood up for what they believed in. I felt as though it was the right time to start a clothing line that represented the modern feminist, a woman who’s confident in herself, a woman who believes in equal rights and pay, a woman who feels as though she can do anything she puts her mind to.

How did you come up with the name?

Skylar is the name of the daughter I never had. When I had my second child, I desperately wanted a daughter. We did the whole “cake cutting” thing, and I had high hopes that I’d see pink cream inside. Instead it was blue. I love the fact that I gave birth to another son, but if I had been given the chance to name a daughter I would have chosen Skylar. To me, that name feels both strong and feminine.

Where are your products sold? Are they sold in stores?

Right now, our products are only sold online. You can find them in three places: skylaryoo.com, on Amazon (search Skylar Yoo) as well as on Etsy.

What is your favorite part about running Skylar Yoo?

Every day brings its own excitement and challenges. I love being an entrepreneur – you get both the highs and the lows. My favorite part is writing back and forth with our customers. Just recently, I exchanged emails with a woman in New Zealand who said her daughter’s name was Skylar. I showed her this letter I had written to the fictitious Skylar Yoo and she said that inspired her to want to write her own letters to her daughters. I was more than touched.

My friend Kat has been working part-time with me but she’s going to go full-time starting next month. I’m excited about working with her on growing the brand.

What is your least favorite part about running Skylar Yoo?

Least favorite would probably be working on taxes and finances.

Is there a favorite product?

By far and away, the most popular product in our store is the classic statement tee, “Girls to the Front.” This one shirt really resonates with women because they feel as though it’s finally our time to take a stand. Though it’s only four words, it’s a deeply empowering statement. The writing is hand lettered by artist Maddy Nye. There’s a slightly retro feel to it, yet it feels classic in red and white.

How do you spread the word about your company?

We’ve spread the word by Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest. We mainly concentrate our efforts on those three social media platforms.

A lot of our initial marketing money went to Instagram influencers. We collaborated with over 70 influencers, both micro and macro. 85% of all our sales are generated from Instagram.

Stay Fit and Healthy

Do you have any advice for fellow entrepreneurs?

This is something I’m still working on. Have clear goals – both short term and long term. Know what you are working towards. This will keep you in check.

Do you have a favorite quote or go to saying? 🙂

I have two – “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.” by Henry Ford and “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” by Mahatma Gandi.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

You can learn a lot by joining the right Facebook group (or Mastermind), reading a business/self-help/leadership book or listening to an inspiring podcast. For those just starting their own business, don’t be discouraged when things are slow. Be bold, take risks and be patient. Listen to the feedback of others but trust your gut. Finally, I have this poster up on my living room wall: “Work hard and be nice to people.” That pretty much sums up life.
