Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Jesenia Pena. I am a Los Angeles native. I am married to my high school sweetheart, Chris. We just had our first baby this summer, a little girl named Alexandra. I am obsessed with traveling this beautiful world.
What exactly is Siestas for Fiestas?
We are boutique beach blanket company that gives back. For each blanket purchased, a Christmas meal is provided to a family living in poverty in Cancun, Mexico.
What inspired you to start Siestas for Fiestas?
Chris and I were living in Cancun. Mexico for a few months. During our time there we attended a church that provided Christmas meals for families each year. We wanted to help raise money. At the same time I fell in love with the material our blankets are made out of. It’s then when we decided to make blankets out of this material that feeds families.
How did you come up with the name?
Siesta is a spanish word that means an afternoon nap. Fiesta means to celebrate. When you siesta on your blanket, these families are able to have a Christmas fiesta.
Where are your products sold? Are they sold in stores?
We work with a few stores but we are mainly sell on our website, www.siestasforfiestas.com.
What is your favorite part about running Siestas for Fiestas?
I love that it’s not just about making money. That there is a bigger purpose behind the hard work that goes into running a business. I also love that I run this company with my husband. I am excited that our little girl will be raised in a home that values serving others.
What is your least favorite part about running Siestas for Fiestas?
That I can never clock out. Especially with a new baby, I find it so hard to separate family time and Siestas for Fiestas.
For every blanket that’s purchased, a portion of the proceeds allows an entire family in need to celebrate Christmas with a warm holiday meal, can you tell us about this?
Each meal includes a Rotisserie chicken, vegetable salad, pasta, bread, drinks, plates and utensils for a family of four. The meal is prepared by volunteers from Fe, Amor, y Esperanza’s congregation. They spend 2 days making the food and hours before they package it into a bucket that gets delivered to several towns throughout Cancun. The families line up and pick up their buckets and then take them home to enjoy the meal with their families. It’s very important to Pastor Arturo that they share this meal as a family in order to bring unity.
Is there a favorite product everyone loves?
Our main product is our blankets. We had a white pattern for a while that sold out quickly. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to find it again. We source the material ourselves in Mexico and it’s extremely hard to find the same pattern twice. This is why we encourage our customers to buy it if they like it because we can’t promise we will ever have it again.
How do you spread the word about your company?
Do you have any advice for fellow entrepreneurs?
There are going to be times everything is going great. You will have lots of sales and it’s going to be amazing. There will be other times that things are going to be hard. You won’t get sales and you may question if your hard work is paying off. During these times remember why you started. Remember your purpose.
