Meet the incredibly awesome Sophia Fabian. This University of Maryland #girlboss is looking to push the envelope on your spirit wear, coming up with new looks that are edgy and different. Be sure to check out @shirtsby_soph. We’re obsessed. You will be too!
What inspired you to start Shirts by Soph?
I was inspired this year when I started cutting and designing my own shirts for tailgates. I was receiving so many compliments on the stuff I was wearing that my friends soon asked me to make them stuff as well. They then encouraged me to start an Instagram for all of the different designs I was making and people from all over started to order stuff.
When did you start?
I started this fall because I wanted to create tailgate clothes that would stand out!
Where do you go to school? What year are you? What are you studying?
How do you balance your business, friends and school? Is it hard to do everything?
Shirts by Soph is definitely time consuming but I always make sure school comes first. I’ve made time in my schedule for working on orders so that I am still able to balance school, my social life, and my business. I often save making shirts for the weekend when I have more time during the day and don’t have to worry about classes.
Do you have specific styles or is everything custom?
I can replicate any of the styles that are currently on my Instagram page, shirtsby_soph, but I also have customers reach out to me for custom orders! I’m also currently working on some new styles that I am excited to share on my instagram page soon!
How do you spread the word about your business? How are you building your following?
Since my business is fairly new, I have mostly been spreading the word about my business through word of mouth. For now I’ve been gaining a following through social media but I’m thinking of experimenting with other methods in the near future!
What do you think makes you stand out? Why should someone pick Shirts by Soph over another similar brand?
My designs stand out because they’re so much more than the typical distressed t-shirt or lace-up sweatshirt! I am constantly working on different tailgating looks that are unique such as my denim jackets and patched sweatshirts.
Where do you see your business going? Are you looking to get into retail stores?
I would love to expand my business by hitting more college campuses and maybe even reaching out to other audiences like camps and sororities. I would be open to getting into retail stores in the future but since my business is about one month old, I’m focusing on keeping up with orders for right now.
Do you have a favorite quote or other inspiration?
I like to live my life by the quote “no bad days.” On a day when things might not be going as planned, I think about this quote and it motivates me to turn my attitude around and focus on the positives. We control our own happiness!
What’s your advice to any girl who wants to start a business?
I would tell any girl who wants to start a business to just go for it! If you’re determined and up for committing yourself, you will definitely find success!
