Who are you? & can you tell us a little about yourself?
Hi! My name is Haley Coon. I am a former high school teacher, turned stay at home mom of four. We have four kids six and under, so there is never a dull moment in our household. We are also foster parents, and we recently adopted our youngest son through foster care. I’m just a simple girl from Texas who loves Jesus, coffee, Tex Mex, writing, and hanging with my crazy crew. As of January of 2018, I am also the founder of Restoration Threads.
What exactly is Restoration Threads?
Restoration Threads is a mission minded t-shirt company. Our mission is to raise awareness and provide support for various foster care organizations. Each month, we choose a different foster care organization to support through our shirt sales. Not only do we donate the proceeds to the organization, but we also highlight details about them throughout the month and share the many ways people can get involved in their organization. We aren’t just selling cute shirts and donating the proceeds; we are also working hard at raising awareness.
Our youngest son was our inspiration. We were fostering him at the time when we had the idea. We were beyond blessed by our village when we received our first foster placement. Within hours of our son’s arrival, we were blessed with meals for weeks, gift cards, diapers, babysitting, and constant prayers and encouragement. We were amazed at how many people wanted to be a part of our foster care journey. We realize that not everyone is called to be a foster parent. When given the opportunity, however, almost everyone around us felt called to be a part of our journey. Many people expressed, “I am not able to become a foster parent; but what else can I do to help?” After doing some research, we realized that there are many organizations already doing incredible things for the foster care community. We wanted to create a tangible way to help connect the many people who wanted to support foster care. This is where the idea of Restoration Threads was born.
How did you come up with the name?
We believe that if possible, the primary goal of foster care is family reunification. We believe in the restoration of families. We know that isn’t always the safest or best option for the child, but we believe that God has the ability to restore all things. We love the Bible verse from 1 Peter 5:10, “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself RESTORE you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast.” This is the foundational verse of our company. We will all go through difficult times, but only through Jesus can we truly be restored.
You are advocating for foster care, can you tell us about that?
We choose a different foster care organization each month to financially support through our merchandise sales. We also highlight details about this organizations on social media and share stories about how they are making a difference in their community. Every Friday, we share a “Fact Friday” about foster care as well. I definitely spend more of my time raising awareness than advertising our t-shirts. But, that is what makes us different. More than raising money for our organizations, our goal is to raise awareness. We want these organizations to continue to do well after we support them. We advocate for the over 400,000 children in foster care and the organizations that are making an impact on the foster care community. What sets us apart is that when you purchase from us, you aren’t just buying a t-shirt. When you purchase a shirt from our company, you know that your money is supporting something so much bigger. You know that you are making a difference and being an advocate for foster care.
Is there a favorite product?
Definitely our basic short sleeved tee. At only $24, it’s a great quality t-shirt. Our shirts have a unisex fit with a triblend softness that feels like your favorite vintage t-shirt. Our “Love Anyway” and “No Fear in Love” designs are the most popular.
What is your favorite part about running Restoration Threads?
I love learning more about the organizations we are supporting and cheering them on. We have already supported 11 different organizations, and I have met so many incredible people through this. It’s been fun to raise awareness and let others know about the amazing things happening in foster care. People usually only hear about the negative things in foster care, I love being able to share about the positive things happening through these organizations. While I love being a stay at home mom to our four tiny people, I am so thankful for the creative outlet Restoration Threads has allowed me to have.
What is your least favorite part about running Restoration Threads?
We are only a year in, so we are still very new. My least favorite part is probably time management. Between changing diapers and kissing boo boos, I have a hard time knowing if I should spend the kid’s naptime working, doing laundry, or simply sitting still and finishing my morning coffee for a minute. Time management as a wife, a stay at home mom, and an entrepreneur is a crazy dance I’m still trying to learn.
How do you spread the word about your company?
Facebook and Instagram are our main sources of information. Our friends, family, and customers we have met along the way have been so supportive in helping us spread the word as well. I have been blown away by everyone’s desire to share about Restoration Threads’ mission. We rarely spend money on advertising because we prefer to donate that money to our organizations. So word of mouth is so important for us.
Do you have any advice for fellow entrepreneurs?
Simply that “comparison is the thief of joy.” It’s so easy to see someone else’s beautiful Instagram feed or compare your number of followers to another company. All that does is create self doubt and make you forget your “why.” I am not doing this for fame or followers. I truly believe in our mission and have a passion for raising awareness for foster care. It’s important to trust the organic process of hard work, passion, and determination. Keep working hard at what you love, keep leaning on the Lord, and the Lord will grow your company as He sees fit.
Do you have a favorite quote or go to saying? ☺
“Love anyway.” It’s the saying my husband and I repeated many times throughout our foster care journey. Even when life got scary, exhausting, or just really hard- our only job was to keep loving anyway. “Love anyway” also became our very first t-shirt design.
