Reclaim Your Chill Through Sleep by Sarah Jones, SFTL Guest Blogger

Cranky? Tired? Achy? Can’t focus? Lost your chill? Maybe it’s your lack of sleep, or lack of proper sleep. A good night’s sleep is so important, it does more that help us relax, it needs to be  necessary part of our daily health routine, like flossing our teeth and eating fresh fruit. Healthy sleep not only helps you relax but allows your mind to relax, rest and clear out all the garbage from the past day.

Proper Sleep Schedule

Give yourself a bedtime and work at sticking to it. Your body gets used to the routine and it will become second nature. Try to make it the same time, or if you work shift work, make your bedtime at the same time after you finish your shift, say, five hours after you get home.

Meditation for relaxation but also sleep meditation may be the solution you need. There are several methods available so find one that’s right for you. Sleep meditation might be a nice nightcap after a relaxation meditation or yoga.

Our jobs can take a lot out of us. It may be physical or mentally, but we get stressed. Proper sleep will help you focus, give you energy, keep your mind clear of other things you don’t need to worry about and keep your temperament in check. The best way to increase your productivity is a proper night’s sleep.

Do sleep in your bed. A nice comfortable familiar bed is the best way to ensure your proper sleep.

Don’t fall asleep on the couch in front of the television. This can lead to uncomfortable and cramped sleeping, may cause arms or legs to fall asleep or cause a kink in your neck or back.

If you are sore, stiff and aching the next day, that is the only thing that will be on your mind.

Noise, crowded bus, kids sick or fighting, bad weather, all of these things can bring us down even before we get to work. Without our proper sleep, it’s a losing battle. Relaxing before bed can help bring down the stress and help you get a full night’s sleep. Be prepared to take on that world of yours!

Diet and Exercise

We’ve heard it all, right? That’s because it’s true. A balanced diet and some physical activity will go along way to keeping you healthy. Too much junk food, not enough water  and no exercise can affect our sleep more than we know. Tossing and turning all night due to an upset stomach just leads to a miserable day ahead.

To paraphrase Hamlet, “To sleep, perchance to dream…” What a wonderful place to go each night, dreamland! Look forward to it, relish it, embrace it! Get thee amongst it!  Combatting our stress can be difficult, but don’t let it get ahead of you. Apply some balance in your life and you’ll reclaim your chill in no time.
