Mother Erth – Sustainable Woven Fashion

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Kirsty. I’m married to my favorite person and we have two incredible sons. I’m also one of the founders of Mother Erth.

What exactly is Mother Erth?

Mother Erth is a social enterprise. We repurpose waste that can’t be recycled into beautiful products that are fashionable, one-of-a-kind, and incredibly strong.

What inspired you to start Mother Erth?

My husband and I often think about what kind of world we’re leaving for our children… and what we’re doing about it. Mother Erth is our action step for creating the future we want.

Stay Fit and Healthy

How did you come up with the name?

Our mission is protecting the earth by creating products made of material that would otherwise end up in landfills, and empowering mothers through employment. So this was a combination of the two that stuck.

Where are your products sold? Are they sold in stores?

You can find our products on mothererth.com.

What is your favorite part about running Mother Erth?

People. It’s energizing to meet and work with people who share our vision of reversing the damage we’ve done to our planet.

What is your least favorite part about running Mother Erth?

Not having enough time to accomplish everything with the time I have.

Is there a favorite product?

Yes. At the moment my favorite is our Mother Erth Tote. It holds everything I need on a typical day and I take mine practically everywhere I go. And I love the color combination of my bag. It’s my favorite color and is an expression of me. Like all our other bags it’s durable, easy to care for, and is a great conversation starter. Carrying it around makes me feel good.

Every purchase empowers artisan moms and protects the earth from unrecyclable
plastic pollution. Can you tell us about that?

Absolutely. The main material we use is plastic laminated aluminum (imagine the material used for making juice pouches) that is discarded by manufacturers due to printing errors. In Southeast Asia, plastic laminated aluminum is used for many things from shampoo to sauces and is a major contributor to the plastic pollution problem. So, we directly impact the environment through intercepting this material and upcycling it. Our products are handmade by artisan mothers who work from home and get paid fairly for each item. This gives them the opportunity to earn a livelihood and contribute to providing for their families.

How do you spread the word about your company?

Social media and word-of-mouth.

Do you have any advice for fellow entrepreneurs?

Know where you’re headed and take things one day at a time. Keep learning, keep growing, and be kind to everyone.

Do you have a favorite quote or go to saying?

At the moment it is, “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family” by Mother Theresa. As amazing as it is to be impacting the world for good, I believe loving my family and making time for them is just as important.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

Yes. Thank you, Zara and the She’s Fit to Lead Team for the opportunity to share our story. And cheers to all you amazing ladies out there doing what you can with what you have to make the world a better place!
