Grab your best friend, a hot glue gun, some daisy trim and lots of determination, and what do you get? lo+jo of course! Meet today’s Monday Motivators, Laura Fawzi and Julia Greenzaid, the Lo and Jo behind @lojobands.
1. Tell us about yourselves:
We are Laura and Julia, the Lo and Jo of lo + jo handmade boho college apparel! We are rising seniors at Georgetown University. We met before our freshman year of college when we decided to room together, and we have been roommates and best friends ever since!
2. How did you get started?
It all started when we grabbed a hot glue gun, a few hair bands and daisy trim, and began DIY-ing in our freshman dorm room. After posting our creations on Instagram, the response from potential buyers quickly turned a few supplies and a simple idea into a handmade, daisy-embellished, t-shirt and accessory business! We took the next step and opened our online boutique, where we were thrilled to find people and stores from all across the country checking out our products!
3. What was it like to start your business? Is it ever hard to keep up with everything while being at school?
Starting our business did not feel like business at all! We are so fortunate to be able to be best friends and business partners. Not only has running a business taught us the importance of time management, but it has also shown us that anything is possible if you put your heart into it. (We never would have imagined that our products would be sold in stores across the country! *Pinching ourselves!*)
4. Where do you get your inspiration from?
We find inspiration in our absolute obsession with Georgetown and school spirit (hence our college line), coupled with our love of bright colors, music festivals, the beach (Laura is from Florida), and ready-to-wear effortlessly chic styles featured at fun boutiques like LF (our favorite store)!
5. What’s your top seller? Your absolute favorite? Favorite game day look?
Our absolute favorite lo + jo style is definitely the classic daisy halter! Because it pairs so perfectly with our cheerleader tailgating skirt, you will likely find us taking pictures in it while wishing we went to a big 10 school (don’t worry Georgetown, we are still in love with you)! We take most of our Instagram photos on Georgetown’s campus, and we feel so happy and free in head to toe lo + jo, that we rarely notice the weird glances we get from passerby wondering why we are sporting another school’s apparel! Our top seller is tied between our classic daisy hoodie, and our lace-up tees and sweatshirts! We would like to thank our families and friends for dealing with us constantly lacing up garments, and offering your help and hands!
6. If you could have anyones closet/ wardrobe whose would it be?
Laura would have Kylie Jenner’s closet (she has all of Kylie Jenner’s lip kits) and is always the first one we know to get the newest Kylie cosmetics shades (did someone say #GIRLBOSS?!)! Julia loves Kendall’s style because she can rock the most funky, eclectic looks and make them so desirable! Want to know a silly secret? We named Laura’s sewing machine Kylie and Julia’s Kendall!
7. What’s it like to see everyone wearing your designs?
Seeing people wearing our designs is the most rewarding feeling! At a University of Maryland tailgate, we went up to multiple strangers and asked them to take a picture with us in their lo + jo apparel (we were freaking out inside thinking “WE MADE THAT!!! DOES SHE KNOW?!”) It means so much knowing that we are able to encourage school spirit, while helping girls feel comfortable and trendy in tailgating apparel designed by them, and brought to life by lo + jo!
8. What’s your favorite summer snack/guilty pleasure?
Our summer snack/guilty please would definitely be eating our way through New York City! From Smorgasborg, to Artichoke Pizza and Momofuku Milk bar down the street from us, we’re letting our taste buds do the exploring!
9. What was the moment that you knew that this was really real – that you had really launched a business?
We knew everything was real one night at school when a weird ringtone kept going off on Laura’s phone. We were so confused and when we finally realized the custom ringtone signaled a new order on our online boutique (lojobands.com), we could not stop giggling and smiling! That night marked a turning point: we had too many lace up tee orders to count that we were asking for help from all of our friends, cousins, parents, siblings, you name it! It got to the point where we realized our four hands might not be able to do all on their own (THANK YOU EVERYONE WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOU!) ! We are currently working on expanding our brand ambassador college rep program, so that we help girls build leadership, marketing, sales, and public relations experience! The sky is the limit for all of us and we we want to empower girls to reach for the stars!
Thanks Laura and Julia for the awesome inspiration and your amazing styles! Be sure to check out lo+jo on their website, www.lojobands.com and @lojobands, and tell them She’s Fit To Lead sent you!
