Jennifer founded the perfume company DefineMe Fragrance to empower women through its scents! DefineMe brings personality to fragrances by naming each perfume by a women who isn’t afraid to show who she is.
What exactly is DefineMe Fragrance?
DefineMe offers a collection of award-winning scents that embody inspirational personalities. Every bottle represents mold-breaking, barrier-crushing women that speak to different qualities we strive for: being confident, creative, strong, free-spirited, loving, passionate + fearless.
What is your mission?
To help empower women through our fragrances and our DefineMe Dollar program, for every bottle sold $1 goes to scholarships for girls in low-income countries.
What inspired you to start DefineMe?
Where did you get your inspiration from?
In 2011 I created a line a candles with positive affirmations for my company Pure Designs For Living. They were called “I am loved, I am blessed, I am fearless” etc. My customers were telling me they felt really good when they lit the candles and I realized there was a strong link between scent and well-being. I thought, “ if I can create scents that make people feel good, why not create fragrances with the same intention?”
Fragrances are personal, when you where them they become part of you in a sense. I learned there is a lot of scientific research that connects scent to well-being. Your olfactory sensors are directly linked to your limbic system which is the emotional center in your brain. Scent, if good and meaningful can affect your emotional well-being in a positive way. When you wear our fragrances it’s a reminder throughout the day that you’re loved, strong, fearless and so on.
We saw that you give back to girl’s education, can you tell us about that.
The mission of DefineMe is to make a positive impact on women in our world. To me, education has always been the true connection to empowerment. I believe an education will change the course of a girls’ life, which in turn, will change the course of our world.
Can you tell us why empowering women is one of your passions?
I personally struggled with self-esteem in my teens and early twenties and I know how hard it is. It can lead you into situations that aren’t healthy such as abusive relationships or bad work environments. Women need to know they’re worthy of better, of more.
What is the hardest part about running DefineMe?
The hardest part for me would be the nuts and bolts of business, which is crucial if you’re going to succeed in business. I’m a very creative person, plugging in inventory numbers on an excel sheet is not my favorite thing to do.
How do you spread the word about your company?
We’re a millennial brand so social media is how we get the word out. We also have a ‘social butterfly’ program that you can sign up for on our website if you’d like to work with us.
