Who are you? & can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m a jeweller based in London, England. I work out of a small home studio in my apartment. I have a strong spiritual practice and, when I’m not making pretty things, I can often be found meditating or at a yoga class.
What exactly is Marcia Vidal Jewellery?
My jewellery is based around my own symbolism, designed to protect and empower those who wear them. A contemporary take on ancient talismans and amulets.
What inspired you to start Marcia Vidal Jewellery?
I was on one of my many travels around India and I came across a silversmith teaching people how to make a ring in a day in the magical town of Pushkar. I fell in love with the technique and the town and ended up studying with him for 3 months. I stocked up on all of the tools and carried on experimenting once back in London and my love of making jewellery just grew and grew.
You support the charity Help Refugees, can you tell us about that?
I felt so horribly useless when the refugee crisis over in Europe hit the news. As a small business owner of a young and growing business, I didn’t have the disposable income to donate much money to any charities myself so I figured the best way I could give back would be to give a portion of every sale to a charity. I know that a lot of people also get a good feeling when they buy something beautiful for themselves that also does some good in the world.
Is there a favourite product?
Outside of my wedding rings, my best selling design is my Mini Sunburst necklace. It’s a really popular gift around Christmas time too. It’s such a positive, joyous piece, like gifting someone a ray of sunshine!
What is your favorite part about running Marcia Vidal Jewellery?
There’s something very beautiful and empowering about watching something you have created from scratch growing. Last year was my first full year of making a living solely off my jewellery business and it felt like such a major achievement. It does a lot for your self esteem and gives you a feeling that you could do anything you put your mind to!
What is your least favorite part about running Marcia Vidal Jewellery?
The nerves around not knowing how long things will go well for. It’s a day to day affair, running a retail business. It’s hard to plan ahead for things like holidays as I never know exactly how much money is going to be coming in on any given month. I do sometimes miss the safety of a regular wage.
How do you spread the word about your company?
I love Instagram for promoting my business. It’s such a warm and intimate platform and so easy to form lovely connections with people. I’ve got some really lovely customers through Instagram. I’m also on Etsy so many of my customers find me there.
Do you have any advice for fellow entrepreneurs?
If you’re confident that your idea is something you could make money out of, do everything you can to make it work. Take baby steps and don’t quit your day job until it actually starts making you money. Be patient with it too, it can take years to grow a business. You have to have a passion for what you’re doing in order to stay patient otherwise you’ll give up when you don’t see an immediate return.
Do you have a favorite quote or go to saying? ☺
My favourite is this William Blake poem: He who binds to himself a joy /Does the winged life destroy / He who kisses joy as it flies / Lives ineternity’s sunrise
It captures the essence of why I meditate!
