What exactly is Vox Populi Clothing?
Vox Populi Clothing is an online apparel company for men and women (and kiddos very soon!). We design and sell graphic tees, tanks, hoodies, etc. with empowering and inspiring messages. It’s our effort to put a little more love and positivity into the world, while giving back to an important cause.
What is your mission?
My ultimate mission is to change our world in a real and meaningful way. Vox Populi was created to cultivate a culture of generosity and kindness, through empowering messages and giving back. I believe in the power of words, and the ability for language to change hearts and minds; and it starts with the words we each use and messages we spread. I know there is an inspiring, empowering and loving spirit in everyone, and that is the voice I want to embolden and make heard. My mission, above all else, is to raise money for incredible organizations that are already making a difference in the lives of our youth.
What inspired you to start Vox Populi Clothing?
These last few years, I noticed a real divide in our country and in the world; to an extent I had not witnessed in my lifetime. I saw hateful, divisive and destructive rhetoric ultimately shaping the way we spoke to each other, and even the way we started to see and think about one another. I believe in the compassion and kindness of humanity, and I wanted to do my part to infuse our world with more of it.
Where did you get your inspiration from?
I knew I wanted to do something to help mend our broken world, but I wasn’t sure what that would look like. That’s when I started to notice a growing prevalence of graphic tees. T-shirts were becoming a powerful way for campaigns and individuals to make their voices heard – be it their stance on an issue, or a silly representation of their personality. However, I also saw some achieving this with the same divisive voice I wanted to stand against. I think that’s when the idea really came to fruition.
T-shirts are an incredible vehicle for social change and medium for self-expression. We are seeing more and more instances of people using T-shirts to spread awareness about different issues, or just as a reflection of their personality. What we wear says a lot about who we are, and can spread a message in a powerful way. The words written on a T-shirt are not only a reflection of the person wearing it, but also have the unique ability to speak to the people who read it. I think the more we are surrounded by positive and empowering language, the more we’ll start to use it.
We saw that you give back 25% to empowering youth, can you tel us about that?
Yes! THIS is what I’m most excited about. Vox Populi decided early on that it would be sharing its proceeds to youth empowerment programs. On top of donating 25% of our profits, Vox Populi has also set goals to further our donation impact. Our first goal will be reached once we’ve sold 500 t-shirts. After 500 t-shirts are sold, we will donate an additional $1,000. The first of many organizations we have chosen to be the recipient of our donations, is Fresh Lifelines for Youth (FLY). FLY’s mission is to prevent juvenile crime and incarceration through legal education, leadership training, and one-on-one mentoring. FLY believes that ALL their children deserve a chance to become more than their past mistakes. They are an incredible organization, and our goal is to spread awareness about them and the work they are doing, as well as raise money to support their efforts. The youth are our future, and building a better world starts with them.
How do you spread the word about your company?
We use social media – primarily Instagram and Facebook – for all of our marketing. It’s the most effective means of marketing for our product and for our demographic. We are going to start selling in person at local markets and festivals in July, and I can’t wait to see how that goes!
What are your goals for Vox Populi Clothing?
The goal, first and foremost, is to raise money for youth programs through a positive and encouraging message. That being said, I would love to see us get into larger distribution channels and eventually be large enough to support our own brick and mortar store(s)! This would put us in a position that would enable us to increase our donation to upwards of 75% of our profits. The larger we get, the more support we are able to give to our community, so that is the real focus going forward.
What is the biggest surprise you’ve had since you started Vox Populi Clothing?
Honestly, the positive reception it’s received. The support has been overwhelming and I have been so touched by some stories people have shared with me. I didn’t foresee that the would become their mantras and that these shirts would give them hope and inspiration through their own personal struggles. I, of course, had my own ideas of what the shirts meant when they were designed, and it has been incredible to see those messages resonate in different ways with our customers.
What is one piece of advice you would give to a young woman who wants to start her own company?
Go for it. Don’t tell yourself it’s a bad idea, don’t sell yourself short on your ability to see it through, don’t give a voice of influence to any critics in your life, and don’t be afraid to fail. It’s cliche advice we’ve all heard and we all think we understand, but rarely is it advice we follow. I have dismissed hundreds of ideas throughout my life, because I didn’t believe in my ability and I was afraid to fail. You have no idea what you are capable of until you try, and you will have no idea how to succeed until you fail.
