What exactly is Lockedbylaz?
Lockedbylaz creates the most amazing custom gifts that are great for any occasion!
Where did you get the idea for Lockedbylaz?
I came up with the idea to start Lockedbylaz while I was thinking of all the things kids need for sleep away camp. Something that most kids get are those heavy, bulky lock boxes. So I did some research to find something they could use as an alternative, and I found these amazing lockers, which is why my business is called Lockedbylaz!
Where do you get your inspiration?
Since my items are all custom made, I get my inspiration from my customers, and everything that they love!
How did you start Lockedbylaz?
I started Lockedbylaz this past December by making a sample mini locker for my little cousin. I figured I would post it on my Instagram and just see what happened. The response from my family and friends was so amazing, so I made @Lockedbylaz an Instagram account. When I went into work after posting my initial photo of my cousin’s locker, people started approaching me and asking if I could make some for their kids for Chanukah and Christmas. Also, my mother owns an awesome boutique, Infinity/JJLaz in Great Neck, so she brought some of my samples in her store and her customers loved them!
What is your favorite part of running Lockedbylaz?
My absolute favorite part of running Lockedbylaz is that I am a one-woman show. I do every single thing by myself (except when I have to pack a big order, then my parents, brother and boyfriend help me out). From the order taking to the delivery, it is all me. I also love that I get to be creative. My grandmother was an art teacher so I think I got my creative gene from her.
What was it like to start a business?
In the beginning, it was a little scary, since I do all of this by myself. On top of Lockedbylaz I have a full time job, so I was not sure I would have the time to get my products to the customers as quickly as they wanted them. But as time has gone on, it is what I look forward to doing everyday!
What was your business breakthrough moment?
My breakthrough moment was definitely when I came out with my college, camp and custom sunglasses. Within 24 hours I had orders from multiple stores all over the country! It was a really awesome feeling to wake up to tons of emails from people who wanted to sell something that I made.
What are your dreams for Lockedbylaz?
My main dream for Lockedbylaz is that I can keep doing this throughout my life. It really makes me happy that I found something that lets me be creative and that I enjoy doing. I also plan on making some more products in the fall, so I hope those are as successful as the products I currently make.
Where do you go to school and what are you studying?
I actually graduated from LIU C.W. Post in Spring 2014 with a degree in Psychology. I currently work as a Teacher’s Aide at an awesome elementary school in Jericho, NY and I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE my job! (Shout-out to my work fam)
Describe yourself in one word.
How would your best friends describe you?
Goofy, reliable, sassy, and trendy.
What is your guilty pleasure?
My guilty pleasure would definitely have to be Diet Coke from McDonalds. I always feel so funny when I go through the drive thru and I say, “Can I just have a medium Diet Coke?” It tastes so much better than any other Diet Coke, and I cannot seem to give it up no matter how hard I try! I also cannot resist a good black and white cookie!
What do you do for fun?
For fun, I love to go to dinner with my friends, shopping, seeing shows on Broadway, watching old movies (my faves are Bye, Bye Birdie and The Wizard of Oz), hanging out with my family and watching hockey.
What are you most excited for this summer?
I went to Camp Blue Ridge for the past 16 years, and this summer I will be the Group Head for the girls going into 11th grade and I cannot wait!
