What exactly is I’m With The Band?
I’m With The Band is a line of headwear, namely headbands and turbans, made with love in Los Angeles. We take inspiration from original style icons and rock n’ roll and blend it with our passion for health and wellness.
What inspired you to start I’m With The Band?
I was really inspired to bridge the gap between fitness and fashion and also to incorporate my love and appreciation for music into something chic and wearable. Most of the headbands are named after favorite musicians I’m inspired by and dreamy vacation destinations.
Where do you get your inspiration?
I get inspiration from everywhere from my mom to hand painted tiles, to architecture, patterns, colors, textures, music, style, travel, original style icons and nature. I get a lot of inspiration from the music, culture, fashion and attitude of the 60s and 70s.
How did you start I’m With The Band?
With an idea and some action! We found some fabric resources, bought the pieces we loved and were inspired by in the smallest quantities we could, came home and on our living room floors cut and sewed each piece by hand with love and I’m With The Band was born.
What is your favorite part of running I’m With The Band?
I really love the group of people, especially women that I’ve been fortunate enough to meet and be inspired by. There are some incredible people out there and I truly believe in your vibe attracting your tribe and I feel blessed with mine.
What is the hardest part of running I’m With The Band?
I would say just managing it all and my time well. When you’re a small business you wear a lot of hats so figuring out which ones to put on for the day 😉
What are your dreams for I’m With The Band?
They are ever evolving! I’d love to grow my business into something that really nurtures the human spirit and helps people. I’m not sure how that looks yet but it’s what I’m aiming for. I just want to create meaningful offerings that inspire others as much as they do me.
What is your favorite band you have designed?
So hard to choose! I’d say my favorite is The Bowie Stretch Turban because David Bowie is a huge inspiration to me and it’s so easy to wear with anything and I love me some sparkle. The Clapton is my favorite headband. Overall I love classic simplicity and pieces that are easy to throw on and make an outfit.
What was the biggest surprise in your job?
There’s no rulebook for running your own business so you just have to dive in and figure it out as you go. Surprises around every corner!
What is one piece of advice you would give to a young woman wanting to start her own company?
Do something you’re passionate about. My dad always told me, “If you love what you do, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” Life motto / Life goals! Also, be kind and gracious! Together we rise and there’s room at the top for everyone!
What exactly do you do on a day-to-day basis?
Everyday is a little bit different. There are always things that you plan to tackle and then things pop up throughout the day and become priority. On any given day, however, I am corresponding with buyers, influencers, bloggers, etc., posting to our social media accounts, packing / shipping orders and dreaming up new ideas and ways to accomplish them to try to nurture my creativity.
Where do you go to school and what are you studying?
I went to school at Palomar College and The Art Institute and studied fashion design and the business of fashion. I truly believe that there’s no better way to learn than by doing. I’ve learned most of what I know that way and continue to everyday.
What is your current binge watch?
Always on rotation is That 70’s Show. Currently obsessed with Peaky Blinders, everything about it from the filming to the acting to the costuming and scoring is solid gold!
What is your favorite thing to eat?
If I had to pick one thing, I think I’d say a bean, cheese and avocado burrito.
Describe yourself in one word.
How would your best friends describe you?
I think you’d have to ask them 😉
What is your guilty pleasure?
Fancy health food stores and my sweet tooth!
What are you most excited for this fall?
Fall is my favorite season so I always look forward to everything fall from the flavors to the cooler weather to getting to wear rad jackets!
Thanks Kailee. We can’t wait to see you at #ConnectToConfidence at UCLA on October 15th!
