Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I studied International Politics in London and the US, and this is how I got into this whole idea of the empowerment of women. I’m also a yoga teacher and a wellness coach. I believe that for every action there’s a reaction, and I’m all about looking, feeling, and being my best version, so my fashion choices should also be in line with my values. As someone who is a passionate fashionista, I see it as one of my life’s missions to bring more ethics and sustainability into the fashion industry and to inspire young women to see that eco fashion can be just as sexy and fun.
What exactly is Babe Universe?
There’s an awakening, a sorts of revolution among young women – an increasing number of them care about how their choices affect the environment and the world we live in – and we want to give them a voice and a choice to express themselves through fashion, ideas, and feeling part of the community.
What inspired you to start Babe Universe?
I saw ‘The True Cost’ documentary about the horrors of the fashion industry. It shook me to my core, I couldn’t believe that this was happening, and thought someone needs to do something about it. Then I figured – just like with any change in life and in the world – that someone had to be me.
How did you come up with the name?
Around the time when Babe Universe was born, I was reading Gabby Bernstein’s book titled ‘The Universe has your back’. It’s all about replacing fear with love and living with trust, authenticity and confidence. At the same time, I saw one of my favorite fashion designers showing her new tattoo on Instagram – it said ‘BABE’. Then it kind of clicked – but of course – BABE UNIVERSE! The rest is history ha ha.
What is your favorite part about running Babe Universe?
First, knowing that we’re doing something good for the environment. Second, seeing that in a short period of time we managed to create a small, yet beautiful community of like-minded, conscious, style-savvy women. We inspire them with ideas of self-love, body positivity, and the unapologetic celebration of female energy in all its forms. And third – but not least – getting love letters from our happy customers – once they try organic cotton t-shirts with empowering slogans, they don’t want to go back!
Where are your products sold?
Our products are mainly sold in Europe, but we’re planning to expand into other markets, particularly US.
Your fashion is ridiculously ethical, can you tell us about that?
Yes – first of all, our t-shirts are made from GOTS certified organic cotton, and that’s the leading standard in the industry. Also, they’re made in a wind-powered factory that is better for the environment. Part of our annual profits go to support girl education in India, because we believe that girls can do whatever the f**ck they want. Oh, and we will never try to make the women feel less in our advertising campaigns so that they buy our t-shirts. On the contrary, we believe that every woman is beautiful and perfect as she is, in all her flaws and glory. We believe that you don’t need anything from the outside to be better than you are – not even our t-shirt – you just need to love yourself more.
How do you spread the word about your company?
In the world of social media advertising, one of the most powerful selling tools is still good old word of mouth. Customers who get referred by their friends, buy easier, they trust you more, and you can count on their loyalty. So far we’ve been very much relying on organic growth methods and targeting young fashionable women who are already on the journey towards more conscious consuming.
Do you have any advice for fellow entrepreneurs?
Well, given my unusual background as a wellness coach and as a yoga teacher, I would say, don’t forget yourself. It’s very easy to end up working 24/7, especially when you just started your business. However, schedule in some time to take care of your mind, body, and spirit. Work hard, but be efficient. Optimize wherever and whenever you can and make sure to become great at time management – learn the value of your time. Also, I know that no matter how fun it gets, entrepreneurship can sometimes be a lonely place to be, so always reach out and talk with fellow girlbosses, and know that you’re not alone in this.
Do you have a favorite quote or go to saying? 🙂
I think it’s the one that I’ve already mentioned – the Universe has your back! Believe this, and see how your life changes for the better in the craziest, most unexpected and miraculous ways.
