Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m Alli Talley, turning 30 in two weeks (WHAT!?!) and I’m the Marketing/PR Director and Co-Founder of 31 Bits!
What exactly is 31 Bits?
What inspired you to start 31 Bits?
We were juniors in college when our friend (and co-founder) Kallie traveled to Uganda and met women that were making amazing jewelry out of recycled paper. These women desperately needed an income, and we knew back home we had a market. We brought home a box of jewelry and sold out instantly… fast forward nine years later and we’re in over 500 stores in the US and Canada! CRAZY!
Where did the name come from?
The “31” comes from Proverbs 31, which talks about the beauty of a woman who provides for her family and works with her hands. The beneficiaries we work with in Uganda are our example of a Proverbs 31 woman! The “Bits” comes from bits of paper – which is what the beads are made out of!
31 Bits has five founding members, how did you all come together?
Like I said earlier, we all met in college, at Vanguard University. None of us had business experience by any means, but we worked hard and figured it out. We’ve seen each other grow into our positions and roles, and we’ve still managed to stay best friends. It’s been a crazy journey!!
What is on the rise for 31 Bits?
Last year we started working with artisans in Bali, Indonesia. There is a huge need for ethical working conditions, so we’ve created a safe and healthy work environment for our artisans. They make amazing jewelry out of brass – so we’re having fun experimenting with new designs! We also just launched a new bag collection out of Bali called “GOODS” that has been extremely popular. We have a lot of exciting opportunities to expand… I can’t say what it is yet, but something big is launching this Holiday season! Stay tuned! 🙂
What is the hardest part about running 31 Bits?
We always say that we have the best job ever (and we do!) but it DEFINITELY has its share of challenges. Being responsible for over 100 artisans livelihood is scary, and when finances are tight or certain campaigns don’t go as well as we thought, it can be frightening! However, God always manages to provide!
What is the easiest part about running 31 Bits?
Working with my best friends and promoting a product I love and care for so much!
How do you spread the word about your company?
We’re big fans of social media in general. Especially Instagram! Instagram has been a huge tool for us – sharing our story, teaming up with celebrities, and connecting with our customers! Follow us for all the latest news and inside scoop on Bits: @31bits 🙂
Do you have any advice for young entrepreneurs?
GO FOR IT! If you have a dream, pursue it. Don’t wait. And also, HUSTLE. 31 Bits has hands down been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but it’s also been the BEST. Don’t let little bumps in the road get you down!
