Hooked On Hummus! By Hillary Macias

I’m always on the lookout for ways to change up my snack game, and recently I have been getting into different dips and spreads to pair with raw veggies, whole wheat crackers or to slather on a sandwich. Hummus happens to top the list when it comes to spreads for me, and there are plenty of health benefits of this tasty alternative to high fat, high sodium dips and spreads! As an added bonus, the main ingredient in hummus (chickpeas) is a great alternative to use when baking! (since we are officially in Christmas cookie baking season….)

sabra hummusHummus is made from chickpeas, olive oil, garlic, tahini and lemon juice, which makes it high in fiber, protein and slow digesting carbohydrates that keep you feeling fuller longer. It is also low in sodium, shown to decrease inflammation in the body and high in the “good fats” (mono unsaturated and poly unsaturated) – making it super heart healthy! It is also a great option for those of us who have common food allergies, as it is vegetarian and gluten free!

There are a wide variety of hummus flavors out there to try.  My favorite is Sabra brand roasted red pepper hummus – it pairs great with pita chips or raw veggies! Another way you can use hummus is spreading it on a sandwich or wrap. It works great on a turkey avocado sandwich or on a tortilla with some grilled chicken, cheese and lettuce! Other Sabra flavored hummus flavors include:  basil pesto, chipotle, jalapeño, lemon twist, olive tapenade, roasted garlic and pine nut, rosemary with sea salt (my second favorite!), spinach and artichoke, sun dried tomato, spicy and Tuscan garden! All of these flavors are available to order online at Sabra.com and are carried in most grocery stores.

In addition to hummus, Sabra makes a variety of dips and spreads for you to enjoy. I have personally had their Greek yogurt dip in replacement for calorie-laden ranch dressing on salads and with raw vegetables – so delicious! They also make amazing salsa and guacamole, perfect for your next Mexican night! And if you’re in need of a quick, nutritious meal or side dish, grab one of their salads that pack a ton of great ingredients for those of us who don’t have as much time on our hands.

The people at Sabra are truly passionate about continuing to research the health benefits of hummus and its role in a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Their website is great for finding great breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack recipes that are sure to please all! (Did I mention they’re also healthy?!) Total win-win!

So the next time you’re reaching for a snack, go for one of Sabra’s delicious, nutritious options to pair with your crackers, vegetables or snack of choice! And don’t forget to look on their website when you need ideas for your next meal!
