Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Malisa, I’m American-born Thai. My first language is Spanish, followed by Thai, and then English. I graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a degree in psychology, but I decided to pursue nursing after. I received my Advance degree in Nursing, after a year of working, I decided to go back to school, and now I have my Masters in Nursing. I am married to a Marine, Tan, who is the other face of Creative Amme. We have been been married for 5 years and have 2 kids together, Emma and Emery.
What exactly is Creative Amme?
Creative Amme is a laser cut business that cuts pieces for your special moments. This includes name signs for first birthdays/nurseries, cake toppers, welcome signs, anything you can think of for any event or for your house.
What inspired you to start Creative Amme?
I enjoy DIY, and on my daughters first birthday I realized how expensive it was to throw your children a birthday when hiring other people. So I decided for her next birthday or any other event thereafter I would do it all myself. I told Tan, my husband, that I wanted a laser cutter so I can cut things myself. He surprised me by buying me a laser cutting machine for my birthday, and that’s how it all started. It was the inspiration of my daughter and wanting to make pretty things for her.
How did you come up with the name?
Creative Amme is actually named after my daughter, it is her name spelled backwards. Although there are two syllables in her name, Amme is actually pronounced “aim.” This “aim” also correlates to having a good “aim” or “an eye” for things, so that’s how we came up with Creative Amme (“aim”).
What is your favorite part about running Creative Amme?
I have two favorites parts about Creative Amme. My favorite part of running Creative Amme is all the interaction with our followers, especially those with small businesses. I believe in helping small businesses out because everyone deserves to be recognized. My other favorite part is being able to give back, I feel that some of us are are already so blessed with things that we already have, and giving back to those that need it more is a really good feeling.
Where are your products sold?
Our products are sold on both Etsy and on our website www.CreativeAmme.com
Is there a favorite product?
All of them are my favorite product! Especially those that are custom pieces. I love all the ideas and inspiration that our customers give, and I love being able to execute their vision to life.
A portion of the proceeds go towards providing meals to children, can you tell us about that?
The first couple of months of starting Creative Amme, I felt that something was still missing, it wasn’t as fulfilling as I thought it was. I had seen how my friend Olivia, owner of Ailiay, donates a portion of her proceeds to something amazing. She inspired me to do something good, so naturally I told my husband that I wanted to donate a portion of our proceeds to something good. That’s how the idea of donating to the kiddos at the Deaf School in Prachin Buri, Thailand came about. Several years back when I went to Thailand, I had the opportunity to go cook food for orphans at the Deaf School in Prachin Buri, Thailand with my mom. The kids were so very grateful that they were able to eat some delicious home cooked food. Just seeing their faces and how happy they were just because of food, made me realize that you shouldn’t take the little things for granted. Because of my history with them, we chose to donate to that school in Thailand.
How do you spread the word about your company?
Do you have any advice for fellow entrepreneurs?
If you have an idea, go for it! Don’t wait too long, because you won’t know what you will miss out on. Life is about taking risks, if it doesn’t work the first time, there is always a second, third, and fourth time. I wish I had started this sooner, but you know what they say ‘better late than never!” Also, when starting your own company, don’t forget about the little people, because you were once in their shoes. Many also say community over competition, but mean it when you say it, because in this world we need women to empower women, not bring them down!
Do you have a favorite quote or go to saying? 🙂
“Do what you love, Love what you do”
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
If you decide to do something, do it because you want to and because you love it. If you can, give back, because there are others out there in the world that need it more than you do.
