Cause-ology – Supporting Women In Developing Countries

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

In a nutshell…I am a 39 year old entrepreneur, an enneagram 8, a mother of a 14 year-old, and wife of 20 years, with a successful career in sale management. Oh- and we have a small hobby farm!

What exactly is Cause-ology?

Cause-ology is a retail company that curates jewelry and accessories that are handmade from women around the globe. We are committed to fair trade, sustainable job creation, and stopping human trafficking before it ever starts!

What inspired you to start Cause-ology?

I wanted to use my extensive entrepreneur and business experience to create lasting change in women’s lives. A business that was based on mission, but run with world class marketing and business acumen.

How did you come up with the name?

I wanted to have a name that implied that we were more than just beautiful jewelry. That each piece of fabulousness reflects dedication to a mission – or a “cause” if you will.

Stay Fit and Healthy

You partner with women in developing countries to provide jobs & education; can you tell us about that?

First of all, we commission and buy jewelry and accessories from women and artisan groups that are dedicated to this cause. We also specifically partner with groups that specialize in delivering education and business opportunities to women in third world countries. Currently we support programs in India, Uganda, Kenya, Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru, and Malaysia and we are always looking for more artisan partners.

Is there a favorite product?

Our legacy KanthaCollectionis a best seller.

Kantha quilts are a traditional textile found in abundance in India, made from layers of worn cotton saris, sewn together with a distinctive, running stitch. Artisans transform the scraps into beads for jewelry so that no fabric goes to waste. They give new life to a textile that is often discarded. Each Kantha bead has a base made of wood, carved out of scraps gathered from a local furniture factory. It’s sustainable all around!

And our newest collection Color Me Beautifulis rapidly becoming a favorite. Each piece in the Color Me Beautiful collection is inspired by color and women from around the world.

What is your favorite part about running Cause-ology?

I love the community of people that are a part of this brand. The Artisans that we are helping to change their lives, the ambassadors who share the cause, each customer who decides that they will make the choice to join us on the mission. The fact that we are creating lasting change – together!

What is your least favorite part about running Cause-ology?

The tension between actionand acceptancethat is inevitable in entrepreneurship. The enneagram 8 in me wants to charge full steam ahead, make it happen, and accomplish our goals. But in reality, there needs to patience and acceptance that we can only move so fast, that it take time to see lasting change, and that quite frankly, nothing worthwhile is ever built overnight.

How do you spread the word about your company?

We love our Cause-ology Crew – ambassadors that spread the mission on social media while wearing gorgeous jewelry. We also participate in eblasts, pop-up markets, and love selling at women’s events.

Do you have any advice for fellow entrepreneurs?

Ask for help. Every successful, long lasting, entrepreneur has a team behind them. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Even though I have had multiple successful businesses, when I hired my first SM manager – I flat out told her that she was the expert and I needed her expertise. Don’t be afraid to admit to the things you don’t know. And then listen to their advice.

Do you have a favorite quote or go to saying? :)

Every year I pick a quote as my motto or theme. This year – “MESSY action is better than NO action” Basically, it is my reminder that I won’t make progress on the things I don’t even start.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

I believe that women in business can change the lives of the community around them. Every woman needs to know that she is enough. That she isn’t “too much”. That she can give herself permission to start messy – as long as she starts!
