Meet Jennifer – DefineMe Fragrance

Jennifer founded the perfume company DefineMe Fragrance to empower women through its scents! DefineMe brings personality to fragrances by naming each perfume by a women who isn’t afraid to show who she is.

What exactly is DefineMe Fragrance?

DefineMe offers a collection of award-winning scents that embody inspirational personalities. Every bottle represents mold-breaking, barrier-crushing women that speak to different qualities we strive for: being confident, creative, strong, free-spirited, loving, passionate + fearless.

What is your mission?

To help empower women through our fragrances and our DefineMe Dollar program, for every bottle sold $1 goes to scholarships for girls in low-income countries.




What inspired you to start DefineMe?

I had a strong desire to create a product to help empower women. I didn’t feel fulfilled to just work for money or success I felt a strong desire to make a positive impact.

Where did you get your inspiration from?

In 2011 I created a line a candles with positive affirmations for my company Pure Designs For Living. They were called “I am loved, I am blessed, I am fearless” etc. My customers were telling me they felt really good when they lit the candles and I realized there was a strong link between scent and well-being. I thought, “ if I can create scents that make people feel good, why not create fragrances with the same intention?”

Why fragrances?

Fragrances are personal, when you where them they become part of you in a sense. I learned there is a lot of scientific research that connects scent to well-being. Your olfactory sensors are directly linked to your limbic system which is the emotional center in your brain. Scent, if good and meaningful can affect your emotional well-being in a positive way. When you wear our fragrances it’s a reminder throughout the day that you’re loved, strong, fearless and so on.

We saw that you give back to girl’s education, can you tell us about that.

The mission of DefineMe is to make a positive impact on women in our world. To me, education has always been the true connection to empowerment. I believe an education will change the course of a girls’ life, which in turn, will change the course of our world.

Can you tell us why empowering women is one of your passions?

I personally struggled with self-esteem in my teens and early twenties and I know how hard it is. It can lead you into situations that aren’t healthy such as abusive relationships or bad work environments. Women need to know they’re worthy of better, of more.

What is the hardest part about running DefineMe?

The hardest part for me would be the nuts and bolts of business, which is crucial if you’re going to succeed in business.  I’m a very creative person, plugging in inventory numbers on an excel sheet is not my favorite thing to do.

How do you spread the word about your company?

We’re a millennial brand so social media is how we get the word out. We also have a ‘social butterfly’ program that you can sign up for on our website if you’d like to work with us.

Taking a Step with Conscious Step

Tell us about Conscious Step.

Conscious  Step was created as a fun and easy way to raise awareness for serious issues that urgently need solutions.  Each of our socks is partnered to a world class non-profit organization to give direct proceeds and tell the story of a project they are supporting. For example, a pair of water socks provides 18 months of safe and clean water through Matt Damon’s Water.org foundation. As we look to raise awareness for amazing stories and organizations around the world, we strive to reinvent a premium product through eco-friendly standards. Through learning and collaborating with Fair Trade International, Vegan, and other leading sustainable and humanitarian organizations we continued to strive to change the industry standard. Conscious Step was created to give an ordinary purchase, extraordinary purpose.

What is your mission?

We created Conscious Step to spread awareness to the issues that impact the world around us. We believe that in order to change the world, ordinary people need to take part.  Understanding the issues that surround people and our planet, while empowering the world with knowledge and solutions in an uplifting manner. All our products are designed to tell a story with unique hand-crafted boxes to further develop the different story collections. Our team is a strong believer that the first step towards solving any issue is conscious awareness.




What inspired you to start Conscious Step?

Conscious Step was founded on the principle that global awareness was a major issue in poverty.  Giving ordinary people a tangible way to show their passions and the issues that have impacted their lives.  It didn’t have to always be a sad moment, but something to show that you were a part of the fight.  We often see everyday people sacrifice their lives to protect the planet, or learn about and fight against disease.

While starting Conscious Step, our co-founder Hassan was working at the World Health Organization where he became aware of the United Nations Development Goals. These goals are structured to help people understand the root causes of poverty. We were passionate about sharing the stories of people and organizations making sacrifices for a better tomorrow.

What is the best part about running Conscious Step?

Wearing your own socks is pretty amazing, so is testing new products you imagine.  Traveling and having a business based in New York and Sydney is always exhilarating, as well.  Few people are lucky enough to have the opportunity to express themselves or create art, even fewer are lucky enough to do it to make the world a better place.  Without a doubt, the best part is helping the organizations spread awareness and sharing stories of inspired work.

Is there a specific reason you chose socks as a way to give back?

Socks are convenient enough to incorporate in people’s everyday lives and the industry lacks brand loyalty. Socks also have a fun way of making people feel warm. We wanted to reinvent the market, even more as we learned about the overuse of polyester and other materials negatively impacting our skin and the environment.

How do you know you are making a difference? Do you have any success stories you can share with us?

With 27,387 days of HIV/Aids therapy provided, 26,748 meals provided, 80,775 months of clean water, 82,202 books donated, 58,020 trees planted, and 1,689 steps taken, we can see our success in the numbers.

As a young company, we’re very close with our partners. We provide them with unique marketing collateral, local awareness and 200+ stores and volunteer work, which have all played vital roles alongside our donations.

How do you spread the word about your company?

We spread by word-of-mouth through retail stores, markets, press, advertising, collaborations with corporations and our nonprofit partners. Our happy customers continue to be our best resource.

What do you find your biggest challenge is?

While many aspects of growing a business are extremely challenging, the hardest part was creating an eco-friendly supply chain in a world where so many people follow their instincts of cutting corners or hurting the environment for personal gains.

What are your dreams for Conscious Step?

I’d like people in countries across the world to be able to give back and understand issues locally, as well as around the world. To be able to educate their friends, colleagues, and significant others about issues that impact the future and changes they’d like to see and be a part of in the world. Even better, it’d be great for people to understand how it impacts individuals presently, as well as in the future and feel empowered with a solution. I want people to look good and feel comfortable doing it. I like spreading the warm energy that comes with connecting yourself to the greater good in the world.

Do you have a favorite pair of socks?

It varies by season, mood, and outfit.  For sneakers, I definitely have a few different go-to pairs, and likewise with formal attire.

We hear about and see more and more organic cotton. How does using organic cotton impact our lives, the lives of the factory workers and our environment?

A big issue into today’s world of fast fashion is many of us get caught in the latest style, as companies like H&M’s shelves evolve everyday. The common consumer doesn’t understand how it’s possible for products to reach the market at such a low price point.  In many cases, pesticides are used in the farming of regular cotton, toxic dying processes are used and synthetic fabric consumption ends up leading the world to a constant stream of environmental issues.

Producing organic apparel not only improves the health of farmers, but the process uses much less water and prevents the pollution of toxic chemical waste. Stay Fit and Healthy

On your site you list fashion as the second leading cause of pollution in the world. What’s the leading cause?

Oil and fossil fuels.

Last year I saw a movie called “The True Cost.” While I’ve always done my best to educate myself on the global consumption issues with sustainable development, this movie really put in perspective how terrible the conditions in the fashion industry have become.  Factories are forcing mass amounts of people into small vicinities to meet unrealistic deadlines, and synthetic and toxic fabrics are destroying the workers’ health, their water and the environment around them.

Pollution spreads in all directions of these projects — from the poor removal of waste to the inability to recycle the products that have a 3-5 wear lasting cycle.

Looking Professional On a Budget

Getting that first full-time ‘grown-up’ job is an exciting step. After spending four or more years getting an undergraduate degree, this step is what makes it all seem worth it. As great as it is, however, getting the first job tends to be quite stressful when it comes to being presentable in the work force. Unless you held a job during college in which you had to dress professionally, chances are, you do not have all the proper attire for working 40 or more hours a week. Nice clothes usually come with a high price tag, but do not fear because the savings queen is here with some great tips on how to update your wardrobe without breaking the bank.

Revisit your closet

Sometimes, we do not realize what great professional pieces we have in our own closets. Lay out all the clothing on the bed and pull pieces away that are easy to dress up. Portofino shirts, simple blouses, cardigans, and even tank tops are easy to dress up in the business world. Something as simple as adding a blazer over a tank top takes you from college casual to business professional in just a matter of seconds.

Invest in the apps

Smartphone applications, such as 5miles, OfferUp, LetG, and Poshmark all offer great deals on reused clothing. Individuals use the apps to resell clothing they no longer want, and, oftentimes, the clothing is barely used and in perfect condition. Additionally, people usually sell clothing in bundle deals, particular on Poshmark, so that you can select multiple items for a lower cost.

Shop at discount stores

Ross, Marshall’s, TJ Maxx and stores of the like are the perfect places to get professional clothing. These stores offer great brands for a small fraction of the original cost, so that you can stock up on a lot more for a lot less. There is no reason to spend hundreds of dollars on a few great pieces at a designer store when you can spend the same amount of money on a lot more clothing articles at a smaller store.

Focus on essentials

Starting off, you likely do not have much money to blow on a whole new wardrobe. Instead of stressing over how many pieces of clothing and splurging on dozens of blouses, pants and pairs of shoes, get the items that go a long way. Look for items that can be mixed and matched very easily to create some amazing outfits. Look for colors and patterns that go well together instead of items that only look good with one or two other things. When trying on clothes, create different outfits to see how it looks. Even if the clothing articles are a little on the plain side, it’s easy to add some fun to an outfit with accessories you have at home.

Become a coupon queen

Shop ‘til you drop, but make sure to keep the coupons standing. Many stores, such as Macy’s, Kohls and JCPenney, have coupons available on their websites for customers to download. When dealing with a college budget, it is totally acceptable to be ‘that’ person at the register who offers up loads of coupons. You have to do what you have to do, right?

Getting job essentials can seem daunting at times, but it is definitely not impossible. With just a little planning and budget balancing, it’s a simple task to get your wardrobe just as ready for a career as you are.

Meet Jess Puccinelli, Founder of Haute Hope

What exactly is Haute Hope?

Haute Hope is a socially conscious gifting studio based out of Los Angeles, California. What this means is we make gift boxes for consumers and businesses alike, but we only use products that give back to a good cause or positively impact the world.

What is your mission?

Our commitment is to make it easy for people to give good. We do the curating, the designing and the shipping and you sit back knowing you gave a gift that impacted many lives.




What inspired you to start Haute Hope?

In 2013, I was looking for a thoughtful gift to get a friend when I had another friend suggest a company called The Giving Keys. They make necklaces using reused keys with a word engraved on them. Once you embody the word on the key, you give it to someone who needs it more than you. Not only that, but the company employs people transitioning out of homelessness. Up until that point, I was never exposed to a company that was wholly socially conscious and design driven. I told my friend, “I wish there was a place where I could go and someone curated all of these beautiful products that give back, except they were put into gift boxes and I could just pick a box and send it to a friend.” Her response was, “When are you going to start?” So, here we are.

Where did you get your inspiration from?

I was, and still am, inspired by the notion that you can create positive change in the world without sacrificing design. Additionally, I deeply believe there is something profound about giving or receiving a gift that gives back to someone else.

How did you come up with the name?

Fortunately, the name Haute Hope came to me within minutes after the idea did. Haute meaning chic/refined and Hope being the root of all endeavors. If we aren’t cultivating hope, operating in hope or developing opportunities for others to remain hopeful — then what are we doing?

What are the products found in your box?

We curate everything from organic cotton napkins handwoven by marginalized women in developing countries, to candles that up-cycle into art pieces for the home, to teas that give a percentage of proceeds to wildlife preservation organizations. There’s so much! Lately, we’ve been working to quantify the good that happens in each box and it’s so exciting to realize how many different ways one of our gift boxes gives back.

What is the hardest part about running Haute Hope?

Staying patient! The reality is when you start a business, you’re putting massive amounts of time, money, energy and emotion into the first few years with little to no return. I am constantly having to adjust my gauge for the return on investment (ROI). Thankfully, because it is a socially good company, our ROI can be measured in impact, versus profitability or revenue. For a Type A personality like myself — accepting that the growth/stability will only come with perseverance is most definitely the hardest part.

How do you spread the word about your company?

My background is in grass roots marketing and public relations, so, naturally, those methods are the foundation of our strategy. We do experiential marketing events, collaborations and, of course, good old-fashioned word of mouth.

Do you have a favorite quote or go-to saying?

Recently, a friend said to me, “The future belongs to those willing to get their hands dirty.” I absolutely love this — there is no substitute for working hard and smart, especially in a day and age where most are looking for the easy way out.

Do you have any advice for young entrepreneurs?

-Do not, under any circumstances, compare yourself to people or other businesses on the internet. Stay in your lane.

-There is absolutely no “right” way. Do it your way.

-Enjoy this adventure. In many ways, entrepreneurship is a luxury, treasure it and have some fun.

Jobs and Networking
LinkedInThese days, success isn’t just about what you know, but who you know. Research shows that 85 percent of all jobs are acquired through networking. One of the best places to network with people is LinkedIn. You can join groups, talk with various professionals, and learn tons of valuable information about various industries. LinkedIn also offers a great job search app (also free) to easily find and apply to jobs with the click of a button.

Weave
Do you ever wish networking was as easy as finding a date? Well, now the search is just a tad easier. LinkedIn and Tinder seemed to have given birth to this app, as after you sign in with your LinkedIn account, you navigate the app by swiping left or right to various professionals. There are various chat rooms on the app in regards to different needs, such as hiring and fundraising.

Still not sure of what career is the perfect one for you? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Luckily, there is a great app ready to help you figure it out. This app offers numerous quizzes to help you navigate what skills are your best assets and what features in a job will help you become the most successful.

Finding an apartment is difficult, especially when you’re within a tight budget. Zillow lets you select the perfect area you want to live in, set the specifications and amenities you’re looking for, and connect with leasing agents and rental agencies.

Buying a car is a huge commitment. Not only do you have to save a nice chunk of money, but you also have to make sure the car you’re choosing is safe, reliable, and has all the qualities you’re looking for and need. This app aims to take the stress out of this search and connects you to dealerships and car owners to get the best bang for your buck.

If you’re moving somewhere new, it can be difficult figuring out all the greatest places to go. This apps shows the hottest spots to grab some grub, meet up with some people for a drink, and visit all the fun sites in town. No matter what you’re looking for or what you enjoy, Localeur lets you save the best places for you.

Mint
Do you have trouble figuring out your budget? Mint is there to help. The app connects to your bank account, credit cards, loans and more to help ensure you don’t go into debt. It also customizes tips to help you with all of your financial needs.

Splitwise
Money can get complicated when dealing with roommates. Splitwise lets the whole house easily see who owes what and when. Everyone can see the balances, track spending, and set up remainders so that all the bills are always paid on time.

Venmo
Most jobs these days pay their employees via direct deposit, and unless the bank you use is on your way home from work, withdrawing cash costs additional money and can be a bit of a pain. Instead of spending money just to get your money and carrying around a bunch of cash, download Venmo to easily pay for the things you want and need. You can pay bills and easily pay back your friends or request they pay you back for nights out. Some vendors accept is a payment method, too.

She’s Making Nursing Cool with Teat & Cosset

They say the secret to successful entrepreneurship is identifying a problem and coming up with an amazing solution.  We know that with Teat & Cosset, Peggy Economou has done just that – offering stylish solutions to the nursing mom.  

1. Tell us about Teat & Cosset. What makes it special? 

Teat & Cosset was inspired by my struggle to find clothing that was both stylish and functional while I was nursing my daughter, Dafne. I wanted to stop spending money on the same old tired maternity wear made with cheap jersey that I would never wear normally. What makes Teat & Cosset special is that design, quality and functionality are equally important in every collection we design. I’ve heard countless times from stylish moms that they avoid wearing maternity. They buy oversize tops or wear button downs to nurse. Our collection is for those moms, offering chic quality alternatives that make breastfeeding easy. Tops and dresses that don’t scream nursing wear and that any woman would want to wear, whether nursing or not. I love getting non-nursing moms reactions when they see our collection, “Oh wow, I would totally wear this and I’m not even breastfeeding.”  We use mostly natural fibers because they are sustainable and hygienic. Everything is made in Italy, by skilled manufacturers because our mission is to make clothes that mothers can and will want to wear long after they stop nursing. The idea of before, during and after is what we want to stay true to. 




2. You made the transition from big corporation to business founder. Was it difficult? What did you find most surprising? 

Starting a business is never easy, especially when all of a sudden you’re the only one making the big decisions. Lots of things were also totally new to me. Digital Marketing? Branding? PR? I didn’t know the first thing about a lot of these things. I had to believe in myself, in my ideas and trust my instincts. One of the best things about starting a new business is the newfound knowledge that comes with it. What many people don’t think about when they’re dreaming of leaving their job behind is the stress and long hours that come with it.  Coming up with the name, logo and colors in the beginning is the fun part. But there is so much more behind it. And you think about work ALL the time, day and night. It can wear on you and those around you. Another reason why you have to believe in it wholeheartedly.  What was most surprising was that work finally didn’t seem like work anymore…the hours seem to fly by now and if I could work on my business all day I would. I had never felt that way before. But I have a family and personal life to nurture as well so I’m trying to find balance every day. 

3. Knowing what you know now, would you have done anything differently while at Colgate undergrad? 

I probably wouldn’t have done anything differently at Colgate. I got a great liberal arts education. I majored in Economics but took lots of different courses and even spent a semester abroad in Spain. Though I may have done things differently in high school. I loved my art classes and was very creative. I considered going to art & design school after H.S. and my parents would have supported that decision. But I also loved math and economics and thought going to a liberal arts school would be a good compromise. I think what I’m doing now is perfect for combining my strengths in art and economics. It took over 10 years to get here though.

4. What do you want Teat & Cosset to be known for? And, what do you want to be known for? 

I want Teat & Cosset to be known for beautiful, high quality clothing that makes women feel confident and like themselves again. I want to be known for creating something new, something beautiful to help moms reach their breastfeeding milestones. I know clothing was an issue for me while nursing and sometimes I wonder if I had one less obstacle, would I have breastfed for longer? Probably.

5. Was there anyone you had to convince in order for you to launch your company? If so, how did you do it? 

Most of my friends and family supported me when I decided to go ahead with launching the brand. I did however wait to tell many people until the first collection was already under way. I didn’t want it to just be another idea.  Sometimes people tried to sway me in regards to designs, colors, the brand name even, but what I’m realizing is that I have to follow my gut and not always listen to what other people think. Everyone will have an opinion and it can be confusing and throw you off your path. 

6. What’s next on the horizon?

I’m working on getting the brand into retail boutiques in capitals across the United States and Europe. So far Teat & Cosset is available in a store in Milan and will soon be available in NYC. I plan on doing a Northern European tour this summer to meet store owners and will probably do a similar tour in the US. Although we are predominantly an e-commerce brand, I also think it is important for women to touch and see the clothing and be able to try it on.

7. Did you have a business plan when you launched? If yes, have you stuck to it? Do you think business plans work for entrepreneurs? 

A business plan was the first thing I did. Writing things down helped clarify my vision and strategy and made both more tangible. When you start running a business it is easy to get sidetracked from the big picture and get stuck in the daily minutia so I find myself going back to it often. I think it is impossible to completely stick to a business plan, especially the finance part. There will always be unexpected expenses and your projected sales are just that – you will have no idea what your sales will be the first year. In the beginning of any business it takes testing and seeing what works and what doesn’t. Getting feedback from customers is also important. There is only so much you can plan in advance and it is important to be flexible and adapt. 

8. How do you spread the word about your site? 

I underestimated word of mouth initially but I’m realizing how powerful it is. But it takes time and I’m learning to be patient since we’ve only just launched our second collection. There is nothing more powerful than getting a recommendation from a trusted friend. Social media is also a great tool that helps us express our brand values and spread the word. At the same time we’re working with editors and bloggers and influential moms who love our collection.

9. What’s your absolute favorite look for spring? 

I’m loving color right now. I’m a New Yorker at heart but living in Europe has expanded my color palette for sure. And now that winter is over I’m putting blacks and neutrals aside and choosing pretty pastels and some fun color combos like blues, pinks and reds. I love our easy colorful Penelope dress. Paired with simple sandals, it is perfect for the beach or for a warm spring day. I also love our knit Lia T-shirt in Mint. I’ve been wearing mine with white jeans and sneakers.  It’s a classic casual look with a pop of pretty color – perfect for spring!

10.What’s your message for aspiring entrepreneurs? What do you wish you knew? 

Be patient and focused and don’t give up. Stay positive and surround yourself with likeminded people. Having a good support group, that believed in me and the brand, helped me get through the tough days. There were many days early on when I would break down in tears after we had just launched and sales were slim. My husband reminded me to stay positive, that things would get better. I wish I had known how many extra expenses there would be along the way! I would have done things differently for sure. But then again, you don’t learn until you make mistakes yourself. I think a lot of entrepreneurs in the beginning (myself included!) believe once you launch everyone will be interested about you and your product. Not true. It is a daily uphill battle to get recognition and to get people to learn about your brand.

What was your inspiration for starting Me To You Box? 

Our children were the inspiration for starting Me To You Box.  The sentiment of doing or giving “just because” was how our parents raised us.  It turned out to be those moments that truly were the most meaningful.  It’s like a random act of kindness.  We are hoping that our consumers find the same joy through gifting Me To You Box.  Your student might be homesick…have an academic success…experience heart ache…have a birthday…these are all great reasons to send a Me To You Box OR your reason can simply be “just because”.

What were you doing before starting Me To You Box? Has entrepreneurship been what you expected?

Brianna – I had been running a small business of my own leading up to this venture.  My husband has been an inspirational entrepreneur.  It has been the appreciation and respect of these experiences along with the love for family that has made Me To You Box a perfect fit.  It has been more fulfilling than I expected and I am doing it with my sister.

Annyssa – I was a stay at home mom.  As my kids entered high school, I had been listening more intently to what women around me were doing in their careers.  I knew it was time to find something, but didn’t know what it would be.  Then the day came when my sister called me and said, “I have a great idea for a business…”.  Two months later we were up and running.  Entrepreneurship has exceeded my expectations.




What is it like working with your sister?

Brianna – Amazing.  My sister is my best friend and we have always wanted to work together.  We align deeply on our Me To You Box mission (as do we with most things in our lives), and did I mention how much fun it is!

Annyssa – A dream come true.  It is never lost on me that this venture would not be the same if we weren’t doing it together.

How does Me To You Box give back?  What is Julia’s Butterfly Foundation? 

Me To You Box proudly gives back by donating a portion of our revenues to Julia’s Butterfly Foundation (www.juliasbutterflyfoundation.org).  JBF is a volunteer, non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to improving the lives of terminally and chronically ill children and their families.

What did you study while in college? Knowing what you know now (about life and entrepreneurship), is there anything you would have done differently?

Brianna – I graduated from Cornell University with a BS in Communications.  Knowing what I know now, I would have lived my life with a bit more certainty when it came to my gut.  I have always followed that which I am passionate about, and if I could do it again, I would do it with more confidence.

Annyssa – I graduated from Ithaca College with a BS in Business Management and a MBA from Rochester Institute of Technology.  I can’t say I would do anything differently.  Every choice I have made in life has led me here.  To do something differently may have altered or denied this path my sister and I are on.

Tell us about work life balance.  How do you carve out me time? 

Work life balance means understanding and excepting that every day will be different.  That being said, some days will allow more time for the business and other days simply cannot.  Carve out time according to what the day serves up both personally and professionally.

Brianna – My message for aspiring entrepreneurs is to take great inspiration in others and their stories.  Be a good listener.  I wish I knew I could rely more on my own “vision”.  When you have an intuition, be true to it.

Annyssa – Never become complacent. Be grateful for every email and phone call you need to make or return because they mean you and your business are moving forward.  Set new goals, don’t fear change and remember to be present…be where your feet are.

To Everyone Condemning ’13 Reasons Why’

There are numerous articles making their way throughout the internet claiming that 13 Reasons Why does nothing but glamorize suicide. These articles claim that the main character, Hannah, only sought out revenge and that the book sensationalized suicide as a thoughtful and realistic option when battling mental illness. They say that the show completely neglected to show action taken against the boys who raped Hannah, that they should have depicted other options for helping mental illness, and that showing what suicide really looks like is irresponsible. But here’s the truth—this show is one of the greatest depictions of what suicide really is.

Suicide is not an act of revenge

Unless you have personally experienced what it is like to have serious suicidal thoughts, there is no way to fully comprehend what it feels like. Nobody wishes that kind of pain upon anyone else, and for those who have not experienced it, I truly hope you never do. To provide some kind of explanation as to what suicidal thoughts feel like, imagine yourself constantly falling into a black hole. As you’re falling, all you see is the people around you loving each other, spending time together, forgetting about your existence. You see it so much that you forget about your existence, too.

Now, it might not actually be the case that people are ignoring you or that you are alone, but that does not change that feeling. Mental illness is not a cry for help, it’s a malfunction in the brain; a problem that you can work to aid, but not that you can completely control, especially without serious help. Essentially, that black hole you’re falling through is the illness, and it takes over your life.

Mental illness deserves as much attention as physical illness

For those claiming that nobody is responsible for someone else’s mental health—you’re right. Nobody is held responsible because who can ask someone to take hours out of their day, every day, to sit there and make sure that someone suffering is OK. In case it’s not clear, licensed therapy is not cheap, and many times, it isn’t even effective. Someone suffering from mental illness has to trust and connect with the person providing therapy, and if the match isn’t there, the therapy won’t work. But changing therapists and seeing numerous doctors is neither feasible nor realistic, especially when it takes 5x the normal amount of energy just to get out of bed.

Additionally, if you have ever experienced deep depression or had suicidal tendencies, you know exactly how hard it is to seek out help. Getting to a state where you want to commit suicide is not just a tragic fantasy; it’s a point where you don’t even know where or how to seek help. There can be dozens of signs posted, hotlines listed on billboards, and much more, but that doesn’t make it any easier to seek it out. For most people experiencing this, it takes weeks, months, or even years of someone showing this person that they care and helping them realize they need the help and that they have full support. But many suicidal victims don’t receive this because others claim ‘it’s not their problem to help’ and then condemn those who take their lives. And let’s be clear—Hannah Baker sought help from her counselor. She displayed all the warning signs of depression and suicidal tendencies and they all went ignored. So, you are correct, nobody is entirely responsible for someone else’s mental illness, but would you tell a loved one who just lost both their legs that you are not going to help them get out of bed in the morning?

Justice is rarely served

A major part of the 13 Reasons Why story line is that Hannah was sexually harassed, assaulted, and raped. Many people are saying, “Well, the show should have depicted the justice that naturally occurs when those things happen. Not revenge.” Just a heads up, anyone thinking sexual assault and rape are easy processes to receive justice for, is completely misinformed. Those cases can take months or even years, and during that time, the assailant, especially a juvenile, is rarely kept in jail, so he is free to go and do what he wants. In the show, the guy who continually raped women is a white male athlete in a rich and powerful family. Please, go research how many men of that demographic are accused of rape and assault, and how many are actually convicted. It’s not many.




Not showing suicide is belittling its significance

Movies and social media constantly show people graphically killing other people. They depict brutal stabbing, shootings, molestations, rapes, and torture. Yet, somehow, someone choosing to take his or her own life is offensive? Just the other day there was a live video on Facebook of a man being murdered, yet nobody says that his murder glamorizes gun use or death. Suicide is not glamorous, physically, mentally, or emotionally, for anyone who is involved. Choosing not show suicide is just another person saying, “Mental illness is your problem. Fix it yourself.” It completely undermines any attempt for understanding, empathy, or help. Yes, it is incredibly hard to watch someone take his or her own life, but it is so important to see that it is not something done easily and it is an act filled with so much pain that you can’t help but to want to help someone who may be at that stage.

13 Reasons Why broke all the rules regarding discussions about suicide, and honestly, it’s about damn time.

The Little Market: Fashion That Empowers Women Artisans

For those of you who are unfamiliar with The Little Market, it is Lauren Conrad and her best friend Hannah Skvarla’s online market place. Together, they have changed the lives of female artisans worldwide!

Below is what they had to say about their journey together so far…

What exactly is The Little Market?

The Little Market is a nonprofit online shop that offers a selection of fair trade products made by artisans around the world. We seek out partnerships with artisans who follow fair trade practices and empower women. We work with our artisan partners to curate and design handmade goods. We purchase every product upfront to guarantee that the artisans earn a fair and timely wage for their work. We warehouse all of the products in Orange County, California so that we are able to ship them to customers quickly. Our online platform allows us to share these beautiful products with a wider audience than the artisans are able to reach within their own communities.




What is your mission?

The Little Market was founded to empower women around the world and to help artisans help themselves while they’re making their products and preserving traditions that are passed down through generations. With every purchase of the fair trade goods, we’re creating sustainable jobs and a positive, long-lasting impact. Artisans are able to support themselves and their families while making their beautiful goods.

What inspired you to start The Little Market?

Lauren and I started The Little Market because we wanted to find a way to empower women around the world. When we travel together, we love visiting local markets and discovering beautiful handmade goods while meeting the artisans who make each product. Many artisan-made goods preserve skills and cultural traditions that have been passed on for generations. We were determined to find a way to help women generate a much-needed, sustainable income, without any limit by location. We continue to get inspiration from each of the artisans we work with and the stories they share with us.

Where did you get your inspiration from?

We get a lot of our inspiration from the trips that we take and the artisans with whom we meet during our travels. While traveling, we always visit local marketplaces to discover new products. Colors, textiles and designs we find in our travels lead to a lot of our inspiration.

How do you find the artisans that make the products?

We find artisans through word of mouth, referrals, the Fair Trade Federation, and social media. We encourage anyone who is interested in working with us to fill out an application on our website. Our team checks each application to decide if the artisan group meets our fair trade requirements. A fair trade expert on our team reviews every application that is submitted and conducts research in the communities because it’s important to us that the artisans earn fair wages and are in safe working environments.

Do you have a favorite product you sell?

So much love, passion, and time goes into every single product, so it’s almost impossible to choose! I always love our latest discovery or the product we are currently designing. The candles have a special place for me because we put so much time into them — from selecting every fragrance to designing the packaging to developing our special occasion and custom offerings.

What is the hardest part about running The Little Market?

There is a lot of coordination that goes into bringing our artisan-made products to the United States from countries around the world. It is challenging when packages do not make it here, when miscommunications occur with colors and patterns, and when products are held at customs. It can be hard to find ethically made versions of some of our favorite products, which is also why it’s so rewarding. We recognize our challenges are nothing compared to the struggles that our partners face, and their appreciation for our partnerships motivates us to continue to work hard on their behalf.

How do you spread the word about your company?

All of our marketing and promotional efforts are organic. As a nonprofit, all of our proceeds support our artisan partners, so we keep our costs as low as possible. We are active on social media, including Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter, every day. We have also recently launched our blog, which is where we will tell the stories behind our products, share design and style inspiration, talk about causes that are important to us, and show behind-the-scenes details about our mission. Our team sends a newsletter one to two times a week, as well, and you can sign up on our website to follow along.

Do you have a favorite quote or go-to saying?

Anna Lappe said, “Every time you spend money, you’re casting a vote for the kind of world you want.” I think it’s important for each of us to acknowledge our buying power. Shopping ethically means you can make a positive impact on the life of the person who made the product.

Do you have any advice for young entrepreneurs?

Always try to learn and gain as much experience as you can before you officially begin in the world of entrepreneurship. I definitely recommend interning and working in similar fields. It’s important to do something you are passionate about and have an interest in so that it does not feel like work.

Mastering the Art of Apartment Searching

With the end of college comes a new era of living. As soon as you walk across the stage, it is time to say goodbye to the dorm room and hello to your brand new apartment. For those who are in the process of finding your new home and furniture while ballin’ on a budget, follow this list of do’s and don’ts.

Do your research
You may see an apartment that appears absolutely amazing and is within your budget, but make sure to check out the reviews. The most seemingly perfect apartment often has non-negotiable flaws, like unreliable management, excessive fees, and regular pests. Look on sites like Yelp, Apartment.com and Google for honest reviews of the residences. Follow the common rule of thumb that if it seems too good to be true, it likely is.

Stay Fit and Healthy

Don’t spend all your money on brand new furniture
You may be a college graduate, but it is unlikely you have thousands of dollars to blow just on furniture. Instead use free applications like “5 Miles,” “LetGo,” or “Offer Up,” as well as the Market feature on Facebook, to find used furniture. Many of the items people sell are in near perfect condition and cost a small fraction of the original cost. Also, make sure to ask family members and friends; they often have items they are looking to get rid of and will be happy to help out.

Do ask questions
Getting an apartment is a huge step into adulthood that should not be taken lightly. Make sure to spend a lot of time asking the leasing agents as many questions as possible. Find out how rent is paid, included utilities, additional fees, security features, how parking is handled, how often the length can be renewed and for how long, community noise levels, and much more. Many more specific questions can be found online, so make to sure develop a thorough list of the most crucial aspects. You’re going to be paying a lot of money for your home, so it’s totally OK to ask a lot of questions.

Don’t get an apartment without visiting it first
This is just as important as doing research online. Photos only show so much about a residence or the community in which you’ll reside. Spend some time walking through the community, looking at all the rooms of the apartment, and checking out the community features. Aside from having a better idea of what kind of furniture you will need to purchase for your new room, you’ll also have a better sense of the community’s security, maintenance and amenities.

Do set a realistic budget
Unfortunately, apartments do not just pay for themselves. Make sure you have a job that will provide enough money for all the new expenses. Aside from rent, you will likely need to pay for additionally utilities, such as phone, cable, internet, electricity, water, sewer, and trash. Additionally, you will need to take renter’s insurance, groceries, laundry (if you don’t have units in the apartment), gas, loan payments, spending, savings, and any other obligatory payments into consideration. It seems like a lot, but writing out all the costs and income truly prevents you from going from profitable to flat-out broke.

Searching for an apartment is exciting, especially right out of college, but do not let it dictate all rationality. As long as you have a reliable and realistic plan, you will be able to find the place that is perfect for you and that will ensure you continue to thrive post-graduation.

#FearlessFriday – Ways to Boost Your Confidence

Confidence — every girl wants it because when you give a girl confidence, she feels like she can do anything.

However, every girl that I have talked to has, in some way, struggled with this. So, believe me when I say that you are not alone.

In today’s society, finding confidence is something that can be seen as difficult. We are always hearing about how if we aren’t doing something that conforms to society’s standards, then we are wrong, and those standards can be conflicting themselves.  For example, if we are not smaller than a size 2, then it’s time to lose weight, but heaven help you if “they” decide you are too thin, in which case, you are constantly told to eat something.  Alicia Keys is an icon for going sans makeup, but if you’re not naturally beautiful, according to society’s standards, you better wear makeup. Not to mention academics — how could you possibly go to school for x, and yet not know y.  The list goes on and on.

These things that society sees as standards — which honestly are just people’s opinions — actually make life more difficult.

Confidence is all about yourself and the way you feel.  If you are feeling down look at these tips below that can help you boost your confidence. Remember that what matters is you, not people’s opinions, and, therefore, “standards” really don’t mean a thing!  With that:

    • Let go of the need to be perfect. Nobody is.
    • Dress how you want to feel; it will build your inner confidence.
    • Smile — you will feel the positivity around you.
    • Work on turning your weaknesses into strengths.
    • Adjust your posture — stand up straight. It makes you look in control.
    • Text your best friend; he or she will always show you love.
    • Treat yourself to a new hair-do, massage or even a nail day.
    • Surround yourself with supportive people.
    • Cancel out the negativity and focus on the positives.
    • Surround yourself with positive people.




During the journey through this thing called life, it is easy to lose your sense of self-confidence, feel defeated, feel that you aren’t good enough or even that you wish that you were someone else, but confidence is what will take you far in work, college and life, and we are all capable of building it. Some days you will cry, some days you will be afraid of what the future holds and some days you just won’t be feeling it, but I promise you that it is OK, just let it out and move on. Building confidence starts with your actions and doing the things that you are afraid of. Once you do the things you are afraid of, you realize you can do them, and you start to build trust and self-confidence. Remind yourself of your goals, dreams, all the things that you are good at or working towards, and, most importantly, don’t ever let anyone knock you down. Be proud, look yourself in the mirror, compliment yourself and always smile because you are more than perfect.
