Meet Rachel Schostak:
After years of working in New York fashion industry and studying Fashion Merchandising & Marketing at the Fashion Institute of Technology. In 2013, with the focus to bridge the gap between online and offline shopping, and making it easier to shop local, she founded Styleshack.com, marrying her knowledge of fashion retail, merchandising, E-commerce and creative approach toward digital strategy. Most recently Styleshack was acquired by Neighborhood SEEN Magazine https://neighborhoodseen.com/ and now Rachel works as Fashion and Creative Director for SEEN as well as still operating her blog “Notes from the Styleshack.” https://www.neighborhoodseen.shop/notes
What are Styleshack and Neighborhood Seen?
Styleshack was a shop local platform that connected shoppers to independent boutiques around the country. My company, Styleshack was recently acquired by SEEN magazine. SEEN is a local Metro Detroit publication. Styleshack is now called the Marketplace- https://www.neighborhoodseen.shop
Now that your company has merged with Neighborhood seen, what do you see for the future of these two?
I would love to see us grow in to other neighborhoods around the country
What was it like for you to start your own company?
Challenging. I had a very specific vision and it was hard to find a developer because I was not in the tech space and I was looking for someone to help create my exact vision. The whole experience was totally worthwhile and I wouldn’t change it for anything.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Wake up, workout, check my emails, go into the office by 10 am, meetings in the mornings, then lunch and more emails and meetings into late afternoon. Sometimes emergencies come up and flexible with my schedule.
Where do you see your self in the next 10 years?
I am really excited that Styleshack was acquired by SEEN, and along with the publisher, Kevin Browett and my business partner Amy Gill – we are now building a media company. Between the Magazine publication and our online platform, I think our company has a lot of potential to grow and succeed in all aspects of media.
Also a part of me wants to tap into my fashion design roots and possibly create a private label one day. Of course, I also want to continue to grow my family.
What is the best part of running your own company?
Being your own boss and having that flexibility to adjust as needed, but at the same time all of the success depends on you and the team you create—a great feeling to know, is you can lead a strong team and company. I also loved being part of the process of my vision coming to life through others.
If you had to choose one outfit to have forever, what would it be and why?
Well, definitely a great leather jacket is a classic piece to have and can be worn during any season. A pair of dark jeans is also really versatile. A really classic, clean white button down is also a good top to always have; it can be worn in so many different ways. I always think that having a great pair of sunglasses is important.
How do you keep yourself feeling confident?
Meditation has always helped me. But when I wake up every morning, I know that I love what I do and feel good about myself. I feel like I’m following my purpose in life. To me, being confident is believing in what you are doing. If you don’t then you should change what you are doing.
How do you balance your work life and your personal life?
During my Early 20s it was really hard for me because it was 24/7 work. As I am getting older, being able to set boundaries is really important and has helped.
Sundays are my personal day and I use them well.
What is the best piece of advice someone has given to you, that you see in your everyday life?
Always believe in yourself no matter what! No matter how many no’s you get, still believe in yourself and don’t let that get you down.
Be a good listener – really important always be listening, talk less and listen more, you’ll be able to learn a lot.
