What exactly is Art by Alexavec?
Art by Alexavec is a series of designs, ranging from college/sorority to pop culture, which can be purchased on a variety of items! My most popular items are my laptop stickers, but my designs can also be purchased on clothing, notebooks, bags, and more. Most of my products are ordered through Redbubble, but I also use different providers for things like stickers and tattoo sheets. Most of the time I draw my own work by hand and upload it to my computer, but sometimes I play around on my computer and make some graphic designs as well.
What inspired you to start Art by Alexavec?
Freshman year of college, I started to look into zentangles, and began to replicate ones that I found online. Shortly after, I started making my own designs just for fun and I received many compliments. Right around when putting stickers on laptops became a trend, I stumbled across Redbubble. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to upload some of my designs just for fun. After a few months, I began to make more and more sales and eventually ended up on the trending page! It was then that I knew I had started something awesome.
Where do you get your inspiration?
I find a lot of inspiration through Tumblr and Pinterest. Lately I’ve been into finding quotes on Tumblr and making them into my own by zentangling around them.
What was it like to start a business?
I hadn’t even realized that I had started a business. I started drawing for fun, but I had no idea that it would become this successful. For the first time in a long time, I have become so proud of myself and it’s so nice to see my hard work pay off.
What was your business breakthrough moment?
I think my breakthrough moment was when my friends from other colleges would snap me a picture of a classmate saying “Whoah this girl in my class has your sticker on her computer! You’re famous!” I also was in Starbucks one day and saw a girl with one of my designs on her computer. I just think that it’s so awesome that my work has spread to complete strangers all over the country!
What is your favorite part of running Art by Alexavec?
My favorite part is probably walking around campus and seeing strangers with my stickers on their computer. I always want to say something, but don’t want people thinking I’m a weirdo. I also love getting requests from my friends and seeing them purchase the design! I’ve made tons of customized gifts for people and love seeing the finish product, whether it be a canvas, pillow, or a poster.
What is the hardest part of running Art by Alexavec?
Honestly, finding time to make new designs. I work really hard to maintain good grades as well as have an active social life, which leaves me little room to just sit down and draw. I try to draw at least once every day to keep the creative juices flowing, but I normally get to make a bunch of designs over breaks from school.
What is one piece of advice you would give to a young woman wanting to start her own business?
Just go for it. Stop thinking about what others are going to think, and go for it. At first, I was nervous that everyone would think my art sucked, or was not good enough to be purchased. However, after finally letting go of that initial fear and going for it, I realized my stuff is good enough. We are all our own biggest critics.
What is your favorite sticker you have made?
Where do you go to school and what are you studying?
I go to school at Towson University. I’m currently a senior, and studying Early Childhood/Elementary Education.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Pirate’s Booty. I could eat an entire bag in one sitting if it were socially acceptable. Honestly, I’ll probably end up doing that one-day.
What is your current binge watch?
It depends on my mood. I’m obsessed with “Criminal Minds,” but if I’m home alone, I’d rather resort to “That 70’s Show.”
What do you do for fun?
When I’m not drowning in schoolwork or pursuing my art, I’m usually just hanging out with my friends. I believe that surrounding yourself with people who make you feel good about yourself is extremely important, even if you’re just sitting there hanging out! I’m also really involved with my sorority, Phi Sigma Sigma.
What is your favorite thing to do in fall?
I love fall because you can still go outside and wear a cute sweater and leggings without needing a jacket. However, my favorite thing about fall would probably be Thanksgiving because I get to see my entire family and eat an amazing meal. What more could you ask for?
Describe yourself in one word.
