Who are you? & can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Erin Wilson, I grew up in the Philadelphia area and spent most of my summers at the beach in Long Beach Island, NJ. I went to the University of Vermont for undergrad, spent 12 or so years in Boston working in the corporate world and received my MBA from Boston University. I am so thankful for all of my experiences but I was really ready for a change in my life. I ended up moving into my house on Nantucket full-time and during that time came up with A Salty Soul. I now live on island year-round, run A Salty Soul and I also work in real estate so there is never a dull moment!
What exactly is A Salty Soul?
A Salty Soul is a casual lifestyle brand for those who simply love the sea and are passionate about giving back. We give back to organizations providing kids with access to salty activities. Success will be when we have a robust philanthropic platform! We are about building a community, encouraging exploration, embracing life and supporting the next generation of Salty Souls.
What inspired you to start A Salty Soul?
I always wanted to start something on my own and I wanted to start something with a give back component.
How did you come up with the name?
The name was probably the easier part for me as the brand is really all about bringing together fellow salty souls who love the sea as much as I do.
You give a % of your profits back, can you tell us about that?
We give back to organizations that provide kids access to ‘salty’ activities. I wanted to start with the community I lived in first, Nantucket. For the past two summers the brand has funded surf lessons for local kids through the Boys & Girls Club. As the brand grows I look forward to partnering with more communities.
Is there a favorite product?
The stay salt tank has been a big hit! I also love the hoody as it is just so comfortable and perfect for late afternoons at the beach!
What is your favorite part about running A Salty Soul?
Meeting new people from all over the country, and world, through the brand. Nothing is cooler than when your first order comes in online and it’s not a friend or family member! I have also had the opportunity to get to know so many truly incredibly women entrepreneurs on Nantucket and it has been so cool to work together and we all try to support each other to help us grow all of our businesses. I am a huge believer in supporting one another!
What is your least favorite part about running A Salty Soul?
Hands down inventory management!
How do you spread the word about your company?
Instagram has been a big part of spreading word and also working with various influencers to help get the word out.
Do you have any advice for fellow entrepreneurs?
Don’t take yourself too seriously, have fun and when something goes wrong you just need to course correct and keep forging ahead. Things will happen, I think it is how you handle them that is most important.
Do you have a favorite quote or go to saying? 🙂
