7 Things You Must Eat If You Are In New York by Shia Miller

Ah, New York. The concrete jungle where dreams are made. While New York is known for it’s busy streets, subways, and people, there is one essential that we cannot neglect: the food. Of course, food is essential to any diet. But there is a certain je ne sais quoi when it comes to New York food, that can only be known by experience. Of course, there is a never ending list of the foods that scream home. From the classic pizza and bagels, to fancy festivals and chinese chicken, follow my guide to the best things to eat while in New York.

Pizza

Whether you’re a sweet sauce kind of gal, or you tend to opt for a deep tomato and basil flavor, New York has got the right kind of pizza for you. While Dani’s in Queens is #teamsweetsauce, Di Fara in the heart of Brooklyn boasts a perfect thin crust slice that cannot be forgotten. Either way, you won’t be let down.

Every time I return to school, I pack a dozen in the trunk to get a taste of home. Why are our bagels so good? No one knows for sure, but it’s definitely something in the water. You can find a bagel shop on every corner. Try some with cream cheese and lox, or a smear of butter, if that’s your thing. If you’re feeling artsy and trendy, stop by The Bagel Store on Bedford Ave for a handmade rainbow bagel with birthday cake cream cheese. (The line may be long but trust me, it’s worth the wait)

I mean, who can resist?! While Matzo Ball Soup is simple and subtle, there is nothing that screams “home” quite like it. My personal favorite just so happens to call Katz’s Delicatessen its home.

Speaking of Katz’s Deli, there is absolutely nothing like a pastrami on rye sandwich. Prior to trying one of these treasures, I had never had pastrami in my life. But one bite, and I was sold. If you haven’t made your way to East Houston Street for this New York delicacy you better run now!

If you just so happen to be walking, and you spot a food truck, I have some simple instructions for you: STOP AND EAT. Food trucks are great albeit the fact that they move around and rarely stay in the same place. You can find everything from gourmet tacos to fancy french fries, and so much more in between. The best place to go for food trucks is Smorgasburg during the summer. In Dumbo and Williamsburg on the weekends, the summertime foodie heaven is something you’ll never want to miss.

I am entirely sure that I have never had a bad dessert in all of New York. And I’m not even a dessert kind of person. Just the smell of butter seeping from the door is enough to lure anyone in. Magnolia’s is a classic with cupcakes and pastries to die for. My favorite happens to be Dominique Ansel’s bakery in SoHo, where the cookie shots are limited and the madeleines are baked to order and irresistible.

As much as I love exploring my local neighborhood for new treats to feast on, there is nothing I love more than a home cooked meal. My mom’s beef stew and veggies is my favorite meal, and it’s all I can usually think about when I am on the way home. So be nice to your mothers, ladies.  You’ll never know what she’ll have waiting for you in the kitchen.

I hope you enjoyed my guide! What are your favorite things to eat in New York? Be sure to comment!

  1. Hi Shia. You rock as you may aleady know. Thanks for those tips. I will share my food experiences with you and perhaps you can add them!

  2. I was just in New York for a week. I checked off pizza, food trucks, and desserts. I loveeeee the Yelp app for desserts. Makes it so easy to go to whatever is nearby and hyped about. I went to this place near NYU, Snowdays (shaved ice), twice because the cookies an cream flavor was sooo good.
