2nd KIND – Natural Skincare

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

As a person, I would say that I am very excitable & happy, whether it’s over something that has happened to me or someone else. You could tell me “Hey Kristin, I saw a squirrel this morning” and I would think it’s the most awesome thing of the day ever. I like to be a light in people’s lives as much as I can & can always find the good in any situation. Helping others & my community is something that is very dear to my heart, something that I’m making sure is a core value in my company.

What exactly is 2nd KIND?

2nd KIND is a natural, cruelty-free skincare line we focus on providing products to make everyone feel more confident in themselves & their skincare routine. We strongly believe that self-appreciation is the 1st kind of self-love in the world & skincare is the 2nd. Our mission is to help guide you to find the 1st kind by giving you the 2nd. 2nd KIND is really focused on enhancing the love for yourself, not just through skincare but through a community that supports each other.

What inspired you to start 2nd KIND?

I’ve been super passionate about beauty my entire life. When I went to college in Los Angeles, I had originally gone for color cosmetics & no intention of starting my own company. As time went on, my lifestyle in LA became more natural & I started to incorporate that not only in my eating habits but into my every day routine with makeup, skincare, doing what I could to recycle, etc. After taking classes on the skin in school, it dawned on me that I wanted to do something in the skincare field. I knew there were skincare brands out there that were natural but most of the affordable ones that I’ve seen always had the farmer/hippie look, & while I love that style, it’s not really who I am & I wanted a brand that was minimalistic looking like my aesthetic. After a lot of research & thought, I came to the decision to start my own line.

How did you come up with the name?

The name was originally “Self-Made Cosmetics,” but we came to find that this name was confusing for people in numerous ways. I was sitting on the couch one day & it literally just popped into my head that 2nd KIND would be a cool name.

You started your company at just 19, do you ever feel that starting/having your own company at a young age people treat you differently?

I don’t find that people treat me differently really, most people are usually impressed that I’m starting this young. While it’s really flattering that most think that, I’m always worried that my age may discredit to some what I’m doing because I have “young skin” even though I have a background in beauty. I also fear that people think because I’m this young I don’t know how to run a company, but I’ve done my due diligence & have support of my awesome mom who has had her own business before.

You were just Leaping Bunny approved, can you tell us about that?

This is something I’m so excited about!! A lot of companies say that their cruelty-free & think they are, but sometimes suppliers of ingredients or outside manufacturers don’t disclose to their clients that they test on animals (which is TERRIBLE). Being Leaping Bunny approved means that all of our ingredient suppliers are 100% cruelty-free, making 2nd KIND certified in being cruelty-free too.😊

I heard you have a line that is infused with crystals! Can you tell us about that?

This line is my actual baby. So, when I lived LA I got really into crystals & chakras/energies. I thought having a skincare product that had crystals in them would be so cool to do. When making the product, I kept in mind the crystals properties to the ingredients going into the formula, so all of the ingredients & the crystals match to do similar things for your skin & your energy. I think that sitting down & doing a full-out skincare routine once a week can be so therapeutic (I tend to use this as a way of mediation) & having crystal infused products to use definitely helps me set my intentions back to being right & balances my energy. Our Amethyst + Lavender Spray has an actual crystal inside that you get to have for keepsake, meditating, or however you need to use it to balance yourself out.

Is there a favorite product?

Oh goodness, there’s a couple, but if I HAD to choose one it would definitely be the French Green Clay + Lemongrass Facial Mask. It helps me so much when I get little break outs & leaves my skin feeling refreshed & amazing.

What is your favorite part about running 2nd KIND?

My favorite part about this is definitely getting to make new things. I love when a product is finished & came together how I imagined it to.

What is your least favorite part about running 2nd KIND?

My least favorite thing would be having to plan things out to a T. I’m more of a wing it & let’s see what happens type of person, so when I have to plan I’m a little thrown off.

How do you spread the word about your company?

We mostly are spreading the word through people right now. We’re working on upping all of our marketing, but all of our sales have been through customer recommendations so far.

Stay Fit and Healthy

Do you have any advice for fellow entrepreneurs?

To anyone starting a business, do NOT give up easy. To have even considered starting something of your own takes guts but persevering is where it can get difficult. It won’t always be hard but if your putting in the work & the heart that your supposed to, it’ll work out how you intend it to. There’s always rain before there are flowers.

Do you have a favorite quote or go to saying? 🙂

“’You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” -Wayne Gretsky’ -Michael Scott” from The Office. Hilarious show & great quote.
